The Federation of International Basketball Associations has confirmed Nigeria’s withdrawal from international basketball competitions by inviting Mali to replace D’Tigress at the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Nigeria’s D’Tigress had qualified for the global event at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament held at Belgrade, Serbia in February. But in May, Nigeria’s Federal Government said it was withdrawing Nigerian teams from international competitions for a period of two years. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that this was as a result of the protracted leadership crisis in the Nigeria Basketball Federation. NAN reports that FIBA is an independent association formed by 212 National Basketball Federations throughout the world.

RECENTLY, industries stakeholders called on Federal Government to suspend the 15 per cent levy on wheat grain importation from the two top wheat exporting countries namely Russia and Ukraine. However, it is hard to see how the purchase of wheat and potash from Russia will serve any role in bringing the Ukrainian war to an end. Is it really in the interest of Nigeria to import Russian wheat and potash at the expense of the potential extension of economic sanctions from the West? In the wake of the war, the US commenced the imposition of severe economic sanctions on Russia and Belarus. Germany’s move proves just that’The point here is however not about the Nigerian government’s imposition of sanctions on Russia.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted a 94 per cent decrease in COVID-19 deaths in Africa compared to 2021. However, a variant that is 200 per cent more lethal, would cause an increase in deaths to more than 70,000. The study’s findings infer that only one in 71 COVID-19 cases in Africa have been recorded and projects 166.2 million infections in 2022 compared with the estimated 227.5 million that occurred in 2021. The analysis estimates that COVID-19 was the seventh major cause of death in Africa in 2021, just below malaria. “Now is the time to refine our response and identify populations most at-risk of COVID-19,” the WHO official said.

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission has disclosed in its report that investment commitments declined from $8.41bn in the first quarter of 2021 to $2.58bn within the same period in 2022. This shows that investment commitments declined by 69.32 per cent from Q1 2021 to Q1 2022, according to the Report of Investment Commitments in Nigeria (January to March 2022) by the NIPC. According to the report, the investment commitments in Q1 2022 cut across 33 projects and five states, alongside the Federal Capital Territory. In this period, the manufacturing sector attracted the highest investment commitments of $1.1bn, which is 45 per cent of the total commitments. About $1.13bn investment commitments came from Nigerian investors, which is 44 per cent of the whole commitments.

The suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after he was arrested for his alleged involvement in a N174 billion fraud, The PUNCH can confirm. Idris was released on bail from the custody of the anti-graft agency on Wednesday night in Abuja and has since been reunited with his family. The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed this to our correspondent on Thursday morning. Three days after his arrest, Idris was suspended by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, to enable him to face his probe. Sources within the EFCC also mentioned to our correspondent that the acting-AGF, Anamekwe Nwabuoku, who was appointed after Ahmed Idris’ suspension is also under surveillance concerning accusations of financial impropriety.

A 39-year-old man, Niyi Adeyemo, has accused his wife, Jumoke Bamgbola, 38, of beating him to a pulp during a disagreement at their residence on Love-All Street, Ikosi-Ketu, Lagos State. He said his wife’s demand for a divorce became intense when she returned from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in January 2022. I refused to respond and she said that I must talk to her because she came prepared for me. She tossed me around the house and kept saying that she would make sure I was admitted to a hospital. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the College of Medicine (COMUI) Staff Cooperative Investment and Credit Society Limited, fetes over 200 members of the University College hospital to free medical tests and money-making skills. Members were afforded the opportunity of testing for HIV, hepatitis B and C, blood pressure and sugar levels, kidney, liver and heart function as well as provision of reading glasses. COMUI’s CICS President, Mr S Taiwo Ojo stated that the celebration was of the society’s attainment of the milestone and the faith and know-how of its founding members and urged the Federal government to also consider cooperative societies as a reliable channel in future for palliative programmes, poverty alleviation schemes and economic development initiatives. Dr Olamitoye, a leader in medical entrepreneurship, stated that “find out what successful people do and keep doing such; find what unsuccessful people do and stop doing them. You have to take personal responsibility for your life.”Provost College of Medicine, Professor Yinka Omigbodun urged the people not to limit or look down on themselves, but as a society, ensure that they make a difference in this generation irrespective of the challenges being faced in the country.

No fewer than 44 bandits were said to have been killed in a face-off between two rival bandits’ groups in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. An indigene of Shinkafi town, Musa Suleiman, told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the fight broke out between the two rival groups near Maniya village. Some bandits on Tuesday abducted students and travellers along the Birnin Gwari highway, in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. It was learnt that the hoodlums also burnt eight vehicles in which the students were travelling to participate in the examination for the School of Health Technology, in Makarfi, scheduled to hold at the Kaduna State University in the metropolis. The Public Relations Officer of the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressive Union, Idris Saidu, who stated this in a statement, said the bandits laid siege on three different locations on the highway, forcing motorists to make u-turn. According to the spokesman, those who were not lucky fell into the trap set by the bandits and were subsequently abducted. The statement read, “Scores of travellers and students who were to write examinations for admission into school of Health, Makarfi affiliated to the Kaduna State University were abducted.
