AN attempt to smuggle a petroleum product to another country was thwarted by operatives of Oyo/Osun area command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) when they intercepted 141 drums of 200 litres each of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol. Also, the area command collected a total of N5,436,756,547.04 billion as revenue in April, which indicated an increase of N905,917,556.46 million when compared with the amount collected within the same period in 2021. This made the total revenue collected from January to April to be N19,031,603,833.66 billion. Further in its anti-smuggling operation, the Comptroller stated further that between March 11 and May 23, the area command made series of interceptions comprising 76 seizures and four suspects’ detention. In addition, 67 compressed wraps of cannabis were also intercepted by the command’s operatives with three suspects arrested.

OYO State government has declared its interest in partnering with a project that aims at carrying out a research on Micro, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs (MSMEs) in agriculture, farmers and agribusiness in Africa. “The future of Nigerians and Nigeria’s economy depends strongly on harnessing the potentials of the MSME agricultural and agribusiness; a project like this will help achieve this. “Oyo State hopes to partner with you and learn from you on this project. We would like to understand how their incomes and their livelihoods can be supported through the research.”The representative of the Michigan State University, Prof David Tschirley spoke to journalists on the importance of the project in Nigeria. The five year (2021-2026) Bill Melinda Gates Foundation funded project which will be led by Michigan State University, has partner institutions from Nigeria like University of Ibadan, Babcock University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) as collaborators.

The Ondo State Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Akure, the state capital, has sentenced a man, Stephanus Stephen, to 12 months’ imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl. The convict was arrested and charged to court for having carnal knowledge of the teenager between February and May 2022 on Morolayo Street, Valentino, Ondo State. During the arraignment, the prosecutor, Mr Benard Olagbayi, told the court that the convict molested the victim on different occasions. 37 Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”Olagbayi prayed the court to sentence the 20-year-old man, who was not legally represented in court. The magistrate, Mrs Charity Adeyanju, found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment without an option of a fine.

The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji has been declared the winner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primary election for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency held on Sunday. In Bende Federal Constituency, a former House of Representative member, Nnenna Ukeje won with great chances of returning back after several years of absence at the green chamber. However, the primaries were reportedly marred by irregularities, protests and withdrawals due to process malfunction in many areas. Similarly, more issues also arose over the House of Assembly primary as results were seen without most electoral officers coming to the election venues to conduct the primary. The Nigerian government on Monday said it has shortlisted about 8,800 students for scholarship opportunities abroad. The shortlisted students were from among 26,000 that applied for its overseas scholarship programme backed by Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). The annual PTDF scholarship has been ongoing since 2000, giving sponsorship placements for Nigerians acquiring masters and Ph.Ds. The manager of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme at PTDF, Bello Mustapha, announced the number of shortlisted candidates in Abuja. The selected candidates will be trained in the UK where PTDF has a pact with 18 universities; Germany, Malaysia, France and China.
