With climate change being one of the most urgent challenges facing society, BASF has launched a partnership with Junior Achievement Worldwide (JAW) and eight JA member nations to encourage young people to contribute to a just transition and a sustainable future. The groups affirmed that youths are key players in the drive for sustainable growth. This was contained in a statement by JA, signed by the Assistant Manager, Marketing and Communications, Mr Samuel Arowosafe, yesterday, in Lagos. The Kunming Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Monday, reported that a Chinese research team found that continued global warming may lead to shorter floral life of plants. Using published data on floral longevity from 818 angiosperm species, researchers from the institute presented the first global quantification of the latitudinal pattern of floral longevity and the relationships between floral longevity and a range of biotic and abiotic factors. According to the study, the environmental temperature during the flowering season shows the highest influence on the longevity of flowers. In areas of high temperature, drought, and strong solar radiation, plants tended to have shorter floral lives. Continuous global warming and extreme high-temperature events may shorten the flower life of plants, and then aggravate the insufficient pollination of plants, resulting in changes in plant population or geographical distribution, said the study.

A report says less than four per cent of global climate change research funding in the past three decades was channeled to the continent. Besides, the United Nations Environment Programme has projected that between 75 million and 250 million African people would be affected by climate-induced water stress while financing COP26 compliance could potentially strand Africa’s natural resources including natural gas. Already, over 76 million farmers have accessed improved agricultural technologies through the programme. The flagship component, Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT), is reported to have delivered climate-smart seeds to 12 million farmers in 27 countries in about two years. Nigeria is depending heavily on the importation of petroleum products, all the refineries are not yet working despite several promises by government that the plants will start production. Secondly, even small-scale refineries should be encouraged to come up to boost the moribund refineries we have. So there must be a competition of petroleum products refining in Nigeria, whereby we can have alternatives. But I still want to let you know that I’m aware that 11 companies were pre-qualified to build refineries in Nigeria. Since marketers are aware of these challenges, why are you not supporting the government in terms of petroleum products importation?

So, in 1978, that anthem was retired in favour of another national prayer as an anthem. Unbeknown to most Nigerians the real prayer for the country was written four years before the Amalgamation thousands of kilometres from Nigeria. The tale of Tagore, India and Nigeria make for the most unlikely of narrative coincidence. It is, therefore, not at all un-natural that Tagore’s prayer for Nigeria was also made in India. For Nigeria, they are Tagore’s prayer in the fourth stanza of Gitanjali 108 answered:Whoever you fling to a lower level will bind you to that level.
