CBN raises interest rate to 13% from 11.5%
THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 13.5 per cent, in a bid to mop up excess liquidity ahead of the 2023 general elections. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, concluded its two-day meeting which was the third in the year. The Committee at the end of the meeting elected to hike the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) and retain other policy parameters the benchmark interest rate (MPR) which is the benchmark interest rate was raised by 150 basis points (bps) to 13.00 per cent from 11.50 per cent. It should be noted that this was the first time in two and a half years that the policy-setting committee of the nation’s financial regulator would increase the MPR, which measures the interest rate. The MPR is the baseline interest rate in an economy while every other interest rate used within such an economy is built on it.

Flush out traitors within the security agencies
To win the war against terrorism and bring the 13-year-old Islamist insurgency and banditry to a close, uprooting traitors and cleansing the security agencies of betrayers should be a major plank of the strategy. According to the National Security Tracker run by the Council on Foreign Relations, between January 1 and May 15, this year, criminals killed 323 security agents across the country. The victims included soldiers, police officers, and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Correctional Service. For a country fighting insurgency and various forms of criminality on all fronts, the avoidable loss of its security personnel should not be allowed to continue. Other security agencies too should look inwards and root out fifth columnists in their ranks, including the SSS and the police.

Train attack: Families cry to FG as terrorists issue death threat

Two burnt to death in Anambra tanker explosion
Two persons have been burnt to death in a tanker explosion that occurred along the Umunya Road on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Tuesday. It was gathered that the tanker fell inside a gutter after the driver lost control and immediately went up in flames. The unidentified driver of a Mack tanker with no registration number which was laden with PMS and an Urban shuttle Bus with no registration number were involved in the fatal road crash. According to an eyewitness report, the tanker driver was on top speed, lost control, and rammed into the shuttle from behind, and exploded with both vehicles catching fire. Five male adults were involved in the crash while two male adults, were killed with one person burnt beyond recognition.
