Over 24 hours after a corpse was found on the international runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is yet to unravel the identity of the dead. FAAN in a statement on Friday confirmed the report and said it had begun a probe into the cause of the unfortunate incident. Nigerians were shocked by the report of a mangled body on the runway on Thursday. There have been airport security breaches in recent times. An accident was averted at the airside of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos some months ago when a speeding vehicle had a near collision with a Dana Air plane taxiing to take off on Runway 18L of the airport.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nigeria rose to 255,924 on Thursday< with additional 29 infections recorded by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). [ad] The NCDC said this on Friday morning via its official website. It said that the 29 new cases were reported from two states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Lagos, the epicentre for the disease, reported most of the cases confirmed on Thursday with 19 infections. Kaduna reported seven cases and FCT, three.

Flight operations have resumed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, after the removal of a mangled body on the runway. A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, hinted that full flight operations have resumed after the runway was cleared of the mangled corpse of a yet-to-be-identified man. “As a result, between 0110 and 0343 hours, the runway was temporarily closed to allow for an immediate evacuation of the remains. Flight operations resumed at 0343 hours. During the temporary shutdown of the runway, international flights were prevented from landing and taking off from the airport’s international terminal.

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of minimum wage arrears, which it owed lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and Academic Staff Union of Universities as part of efforts to end ongoing strikes by the unions, The PUNCH has learnt. The National President of ASUP, Dr. Anderson Ezeibe, and the Chairman, ASUU FUTMinna, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed this in separate interviews with our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday. The PUNCH reported that the two unions are currently on strike following the inability of the government to meet their demands including the payment of minimum wage arrears and release of revitalisation funds, among others. While ASUU commenced its strike on February 14, 2022, ASUP is currently on an initial two-week warning strike. They just started paying the salary/minimum wage arrears, the one they have refused to pay.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Friday called for “technological sovereignty”, saying Russia had been hit by numerous cyberattacks since Moscow sent troops to Ukraine. “The number of cyberattacks, including complex ones, has increased many times over” since the start of Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine in February, Putin said during a meeting of Russia’s Security Council. “The attacks are coming from different countries but are clearly coordinated,” Putin added. Russia needs to “radically reduce the risks associated with the use of foreign programmes, computer technology, and telecommunications equipment”, Putin said. “In order to strengthen our technological sovereignty, the government needs to create a modern Russian electronic component base in the shortest time possible,” he added.
