The National President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has sympathised with University students over the prolonged strike by the Union. He was reacting to the N34 billion released by the federal government for payment of minimum wage consequential adjustment. The ASUU president said the students were not being punished but paying the price to ensure that Nigeria had a good education system. The ASUU president said there was no need to call off the strike when the federal government had not attended to their demands. He, therefore, called on the federal government to do the needful as the N34 billion released was not part of their demands.

The eldest son of Ambassador Aminu Wali, Alhaji Sadiq Wali, has won the factional PDP governorship primaries conducted on Wednesday night. Wali polled 455 to beat other contestants such as the serial governorship contender, Ibrahim El Amin Little, who scored 322 votes to become second in the race. Yusuf Dangwani had 276 votes while Mustapha Getso and Jafa’ar Bello polled 25 votes each. Muhyi Magaji Rimingado and Mu’azu Magaji Dan Sarauniyya have withdrewn from the governorship contest. Chief Bartho Igwedibia, Chairman Accord Party, Anambra, says the resignation of Mr Peter Obi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has became a blessing in disguise for smaller parties in the state. Igwedibia, who made the assertion while briefing journalists at the state secretariat of the party on Thursday in Awka, urged Obi to join his party. According to him, the exit of Mr Peter Obi from the PDP is like a thunderbolt to his former party, but a very joyous development to smaller parties like Accord in the state. Igwedibia also used the medium to reaffirm the expulsion of one Innocent Igboekwe from the party. The Accord Party chairman warned the public against dealing with Igboekwe who, according to him, was the state vice chairman of the party before his expulsion.

The head of the World Bank has warned that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could cause a global recession as the price of food, energy and fertiliser jump. Three delegates meant to have voted during the gubernatorial primaries of the People Democratic party on Wednesday have been killed by bandits. The delegates who are from Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State were killed when they were traveling back to their homes to get a means of identification to enable them to get accredited. The delegates were forced to travel back to get a means of identification after a protest erupted by four of the five aspirants over the authenticity of the delegates’ list. One of the delegates who was an eyewitness Shehu Haruna told journalists that their vehicle ran into the bandits who opened fire on them between Mariga and Tegina and four people lost their lives. “We were returning home to get our means of identification and on the road we ran into bandits who opened fire on our vehicle.

THE director-general, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, says although sexual contact is a possible means by which individuals can contract monkeypox, the disease is yet to be confirmed as a sexually transmitted infection. Meanwhile, Professor Oyewale Tomori said Nigeria needs to sequence all monkeypox cases in Nigeria to better understand the disease in the country and to influence subsequent steps the government needs to take. And the sequencing shows that the origin is from Nigeria but the spread is not by Nigerians but their people over there. So, something must have happened with the current monkeypox virus. So, we need to quickly sequence the cases we had in Nigeria.”

A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has dumped the party. In a letter addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, titled ‘Resignation From Peoples Democratic and Withdrawal From the Presidential Contest’, the former governor said he was happy to have contributed to the nation-building efforts of the country through the PDP. The letter partly read, “I am writing to intimate you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, which was conveyed to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA, Anambra, effective Friday, May 20, 2022. “Consequently, I am by this letter informing you of my withdrawal from the PDP Presidential Primaries“It has been a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through our party.
