India is set to import avocados from Brazil for the first time, aiming to address the high prices of the fruit in the domestic market, which range from ₹100 to ₹2,000 per kilogram depending on the variety. Brazil, known for being one of the largest avocado producers globally, will supply hass avocados to India initially. Brazil plans to export smaller avocados that are less consumed domestically, starting with shipments potentially as early as February 2025. The initiative aims to introduce Brazilian avocados to Indian consumers, potentially stabilizing prices and offering more affordable options compared to the current imported varieties. To promote this new trade, Brazil's export promotion agency, ApexBrasil, will conduct a workshop in Mumbai by the end of August to familiarize Indian stakeholders with Brazilian avocados' flavors and quality.

The U.S. Congress would need to pass legislation requiring such a warning label. Youth advocates and lawmakers have long accused social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat of what they say is a harmful effect on kids, including shortened attention spans, promoting negative body images, and making them vulnerable to online bullies and predators. "It is time to require a surgeon general's warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents," Murthy wrote on Monday.TikTok, Snap and Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook and Instagram, did not respond to requests for comment. The CEOs of those three companies, along with social media platform X and messaging app Discord, were grilled by U.S. senators in January during a hearing about online child safety , with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham accusing the leaders of having "blood on your hands," for failing to protect young users from sexual predators. Some U.S. states have been working to pass legislation to safeguard children from the harmful effects of social media, such as anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses as a result.New York state lawmakers this month passed legislation to bar social media platforms from exposing "addictive" algorithmic content to users under age 18 without parental consent. In March, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that bans children under 14 from social media platforms and requires 14- and 15-year-olds to get parental consent.

Sharp overnight rains lashed the city and its nearby areas, leading to flight disruption and uprooting of trees on Tuesday. A number of arriving and departing international and domestic flights were delayed due to the rains, officials at the airport said. Services to and from Dubai, Delhi and Pune were among those delayed, they added. In the city, trees were uprooted in some parts, including Kodambakkam, and the civic personnel were in the process of removing them. The cities actually have become heat traps." "Hot nights are as dangerous as mid-day peak temperatures," the Centre's report said. "People get little chance to recover from day-time heat if temperatures remain high overnight." Delhi's long-term plan includes increasing heat insulation of buildings, developing shelters for urban poor and slum dwellers, and investing in cooling water bodies. "Cities are struggling with their own finance and they don't have additional budget to implement actions for heat," he said.

India has more nuclear weapons than Pakistan, China has... The SIPRI said nine nuclear-armed states -- the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel -- continued to modernise their nuclear arsenals and several deployed new nuclear-armed or nuclear-capable weapon systems in 2023. The report put India's 'stored' nuclear warheads at 172 in January this year while the number for Pakistan was 170. India slightly expanded its nuclear arsenal in 2023, it said, adding that both India and Pakistan continued to develop new types of nuclear delivery systems in 2023. "While Pakistan remains the main focus of India's nuclear deterrent, India appears to be placing growing emphasis on longer-range weapons, including those capable of reaching targets throughout China," the report said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disbanded his war cabinet Monday, a move that consolidates his influence over the Israel-Hamas war and likely diminishes the odds of a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip anytime soon. Netanyahu announced the step days after his chief political rival, Benny Gantz, withdrew from the three-member war cabinet. Gantz, a retired general and member of parliament, was widely seen as a more moderate voice. Major war policies will now be solely approved by Netanyahu's security cabinet — a larger body that is dominated by hard-liners who oppose the U.S.-backed cease-fire proposal and want to press ahead with the war.

NCP (SP) legislator Rohit Pawar on June 17 downplayed suggestions of a rift with Jayant Patil, State chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) faction. He said that while Mr. Patil was doing a fine job, more work needed to be done in some cells within the party. Mr. Patil, in his turn, chided Mr. Rohit for bringing up these issues in a public forum. Another prominent youth leader of the NCP (SP), Dheeraj Sharma, recently joined the rebel NCP faction led by Mr. Ajit Pawar. However, many legislators are saying they will take a decision after the Maharashtra Legislature session is over, as they are worried that if they come over now, then they will not be allocated their constituency funds,” claimed Mr. Rohit Pawar.
