Kanchenjunga Express mishap: Train services resume at Darjeeling accident site
Train services resumed on Tuesday on the railway line in the Phansidewa area of the Darjeeling district where the Kanchenjunga Express train met with an accident on Monday, killing 8 people and leaving around 25 people injured. A Railway official told that, the restoration work on the railway line had started yesterday night. The trial of an engine was carried out upline towards NJP (New Jalpaiguri Junction) on Monday. Surendra Kumar, DRM Katihar, Northeast Frontier Railway told ANI that for the last 24 hours, all the workers have been working very diligently to restore the railway line.

India set to import avocados from Brazil
India is set to import avocados from Brazil for the first time, aiming to address the high prices of the fruit in the domestic market, which range from ₹100 to ₹2,000 per kilogram depending on the variety. Brazil, known for being one of the largest avocado producers globally, will supply hass avocados to India initially. Brazil plans to export smaller avocados that are less consumed domestically, starting with shipments potentially as early as February 2025. The initiative aims to introduce Brazilian avocados to Indian consumers, potentially stabilizing prices and offering more affordable options compared to the current imported varieties. To promote this new trade, Brazil's export promotion agency, ApexBrasil, will conduct a workshop in Mumbai by the end of August to familiarize Indian stakeholders with Brazilian avocados' flavors and quality.

Kanchenjunga Express crash: 'We are very afraid…', Passengers recount the horror
Sealdah (WB): The Kanchenjunga Express, which met with a tragic accident near Rangapani Station in Darjeeling on June 17, arrived at Sealdah railway station on June 18 after the completion of restoration work. The accident claimed eight lives and left around 25 injured. Medical booth and help desk were established in Sealdah station, along with transport arrangements for all the incoming passengers. Few victims who sustained injuries are even finding it difficult to walk properly. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim interacted with the survivors, assisting them with the special transport services organized to ensure they reached their destinations safely.

Nikhil Gupta, accused in Pannun murder plot, extradited to US; pleads not guilty in court through his lawyer
Indian national Nikhil Gupta, who is accused of being involved in murder-for-hire plot against a Sikh separatist, has been extradited from Czeck Republic, media reports said Sunday. Gupta, 52, was arrested in the Czeck Republic last year at the request of the US government on charges of being involved in a plot to assassinate Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. He is expected to be produced before a federal court in New York on Monday. Gupta is currently lodged at the federal Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, where he is listed as an inmate. The Washington Post was the first news outlet to report his extradition.

The U.S. Congress would need to pass legislation requiring such a warning label. Youth advocates and lawmakers have long accused social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat of what they say is a harmful effect on kids, including shortened attention spans, promoting negative body images, and making them vulnerable to online bullies and predators. Rains lash Chennai, flight services affected
Sharp overnight rains lashed the city and its nearby areas, leading to flight disruption and uprooting of trees on Tuesday. A number of arriving and departing international and domestic flights were delayed due to the rains, officials at the airport said. Services to and from Dubai, Delhi and Pune were among those delayed, they added. In the city, trees were uprooted in some parts, including Kodambakkam, and the civic personnel were in the process of removing them. The rains brought some respite to the residents from the sweltering heat.

"People get little chance to recover from day-time heat if temperatures remain high overnight." Delhi's long-term plan includes increasing heat insulation of buildings, developing shelters for urban poor and slum dwellers, and investing in cooling water bodies.
