The Government of National Unity (GNU) has declared full support for the Supreme Court in a growing dispute with the House of Representatives, saying the independence of the judiciary must be protected. The government said judicial independence is “the cornerstone” of any democratic process, and called on parliament and all political actors to respect constitutional limits and avoid unilateral actions that could destabilise the country. It urged the UN mission and the wider international community to monitor developments and support the independence and structure of Libya’s judiciary. Earlier, the Supreme Court’s General Assembly criticised the parliamentary speaker, accusing him of undermining the judiciary and making unfounded allegations against the court’s president. The Assembly said the creation of a constitutional court is a constitutional matter, not one for the legislature, and rejected claims of divisions within the judicial system.

TRIPOLI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Libya's public debt stood at nearly 50 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, according to the annual report of the Libyan Audit Bureau, excerpts of which were published on Wednesday by the state-run Libyan News Agency. Total debt reached 270 billion Libyan dinars (around 49.8 billion dollars), including 84 billion dinars owed by the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) and 186 billion dinars owed by the eastern-based administration appointed by the House of Representatives, the report said. The Audit Bureau said debt levels have remained largely unchanged since 2020. The debt figure nearly matches Libya's economic output, with World Bank data putting the country's 2024 gross domestic product at 46.6 billion dollars. Libya has faced prolonged political instability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi and remains divided between the GNU, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah in the west, and an eastern government headed by Osama Hammad and backed by the House of Representatives.

The local maneuvers on the battlefield are part of a broader rebalancing of regional power, threat perception, and alliance structures within the Middle East. The erosion of state authority has reached a point where the central question is no longer which faction will prevail. For Gulf capitals, the strategic question has shifted from managing diffuse ideological threats to confronting a destabilizing regional power unconstrained by international norms. Yemen thus illustrates the defining characteristics of an emerging regional order. A renewed, if fragile, search for stability through centralized state authority is re-entering the regional agenda.

The party won 197 of 255 seats, up from 163, strengthening President Alassane Ouattara’s hand as he pushes an agenda focused on attracting private investment to the world’s top cocoa producer. Former president Laurent Gbagbo’s party boycotted the vote, arguing it would not be credible. Gbagbo and Thiam were both barred from running in the October presidential election, which Ouattara won with more than 89% of the vote. She said allowing the policy to take effect now would strip beneficiaries of lawful status and could lead to immediate deportations. The ruling pauses the policy as similar court challenges play out over efforts to end TPS for migrants from other countries.
