GNU backs Supreme Court amid judicial dispute

The Government of National Unity (GNU) has declared full support for the Supreme Court in a growing dispute with the House of Representatives, saying the independence of the judiciary must be protected. The government said judicial independence is “the cornerstone” of any democratic process, and called on parliament and all political actors to respect constitutional limits and avoid unilateral actions that could destabilise the country. It urged the UN mission and the wider international community to monitor developments and support the independence and structure of Libya’s judiciary. Earlier, the Supreme Court’s General Assembly criticised the parliamentary speaker, accusing him of undermining the judiciary and making unfounded allegations against the court’s president. The Assembly said the creation of a constitutional court is a constitutional matter, not one for the legislature, and rejected claims of divisions within the judicial system.
