The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed deep concern over the escalating dispute related to the constitutional judiciary, warning that it poses a threat to the unity, independence, and integrity of the judicial system. In a statement, the mission stressed that the Libyan judiciary is a fundamental pillar for preserving the unity of the state, and that any division affecting it would have far-reaching consequences impacting all aspects of life in the country. It also stressed that the existence of a unified and independent judiciary is the cornerstone for establishing the rule of law and achieving the desired democratic governance. It urged all Libyan judicial and political actors to engage in constructive and serious dialogue aimed at finding consensus-based solutions that protect the unity of the judicial institution and place the supreme national interest above all other considerations. UNSMIL renewed its commitment to stand by the Libyan people, affirming its full readiness to provide the necessary support and to back any national efforts aimed at safeguarding judicial unity and strengthening the rule of law to ensure the country’s stability.
