Customs officers in Misrata say they have foiled an attempt to smuggle almost €500,000 out of the country. In a statement, the Customs Authority said officers at Misrata Airport, working with internal security personnel, detained a Libyan passenger travelling to Istanbul after discovering a hidden belt containing €490,290. Officials said the case breaches Libya’s customs and currency regulations and that the suspect, along with the seized money, will be referred to prosecutors after legal procedures are completed. The authority said it would continue efforts to curb smuggling, which it warned undermines the national economy.
