A change in stance now would have made it possible for a rate cut later this calendar year, if the growth impulse turned weak. This reasoning seems to have prompted two of the six MPC members to take a contrary, dovish stance at the June meeting and this one. It has significantly termed food inflation as “persistent” and not “transitory”. A vigil on inflation would perhaps not have been compromised by relaxing the liquidity stance to neutral to lift sentiments. The prospect of global rates being eased allows the RBI to relax its stance without outflow worries.

A powerful earthquake struck off Japan’s southern coast on August 8, triggering a tsunami advisory. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake registered magnitude 7.1 and was centered in waters off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30 kilometres (18.6 miles). The agency said tsunami waves of up 50 centimetres (1.6 feet) were detected along parts of Kyushu’s southern coast and the nearby island of Shikoku about a half hour after the quake struck. “I didn’t speak to you about the ‘partial turnaround’ of the party in the elections just for the sake of it.... The forecasts are mentioned here as an attempt to establish the most important side of Bhattacharjee’s character — he was a dreamer and felt that there would be a better world tomorrow. This ability to dream made the Deng Xiaoping-quoting Communist, who became the state’s chief minister in 2000, attempt something rare — marrying Marxist theory withmarket reality. Like any other dreamer, he also had messages for others, especially the youths for whom he had great hopes. Is there no other vision in life beyond a Maruti, no other identity besides a house?” the then chief minister had said, exhorting students to strive for “higher goals” and pursue “bigger dreams”.
