Existential eruptions can alter the ways we evaluate our identities and priorities, causing big waves (e.g., the Great Resignation) and smaller ripples (e.g., “quiet quitting”). If it’s true that most workers are seriously considering a change, then the ratio should favour potential switchers. But the remaining one-quarter are dissatisfied — and their captivity in the work role leaves them almost as angry and distressed as the dissatisfied potential switchers. Dissatisfied switchers express a desire for change, so that’s why they generate more interest and inspire countless how-to-quit guides. But with little optimism that better days lie ahead, the traces of coasting, slacking, quiet quitting — pick your neologism — are more likely to be found among the dissatisfied stay-putters.

It is a great personal and professional pleasure to send out birthday greetings to former British Columbia Premier Christy Clark, who was born on this date in 1965, in Burnaby, B.C.,Ms. Clark won the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party in early 2011 and served with distinction as the 35th Premier of her province between 2011 and 2017. I remain in her debt to this day. Since leaving politics, Ms. Clark has become a much sought-after commentator and has earned the respect of partisans of all stripes for her perceptive observations of national and provincial politics. Dr. Howard Njoo, Canada’s deputy chief public health officer, explains that the country’s public health agency is encouraging Canadians to “practise enhanced health precautions,” especially when travelling. “A rapid test result is just part of the story,” says Dr. Hota, who recommends factoring in any exposure risks, any symptoms and how they’re progressing. “I don’t think any of this is about judgment,” says Dr. Hota.

Ottawa restricting foreign state-owned investments in critical mineralsOTTAWA — The federal government is restricting the involvement of foreign state-owned companies in Canada's critical minerals sector amid a global rush for the resources and growing tensions with China. Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced the new approach in a statement Friday, saying critical minerals are key to Canada’s prosperity and security. The new rules come as companies and countries around the world are moving to secure critical minerals such as aluminum, lithium and cobalt, many of which are vital for electronics and low-carbon technologies including semiconductors, batteries and electric-vehicle motors. The rules also coincide with growing tensions with China, which has purchased or invested in Canadian mines and other natural resources to feed its own domestic industries. The federal government is expected to release by the end of the year what it is calling a critical minerals strategy, which will seek to position the country as a leader in supplying the resources to industries and other countries around the world.
