"Bats are hugely beneficial to our ecosystems," Danielle Buckle, the southern Vancouver Island bat co-ordinator for the B.C. Make space for roostingBats roost in caves, some trees and in bat houses, so ensure there is some space for them to settle in. According to Bat Conservation International (BCI), dead trees, in particular, are a "gold mine" for bats, providing a place to roost and a place for insects, bats' dinner, to thrive. Instructions on building a bat house can be found online, or you can purchase a prefabricated bat house. BCI advises keeping the lights off in the yard or garden where they're roosting and hunting.

VANCOUVER - Police in Vancouver say five people were stabbed in less than an hour early Sunday as Halloween partiers flooded the city’s entertainment zones. Steve Addison says all five victims went to hospital and the attacks occurred in two separate and unrelated incidents. Less than an hour later, they say officers patrolling downtown intervened in a large fight between two groups on Granville Street that left two men in their 20s with stab wounds to the face, hands and torso. Police say the attackers in the first case fled and they have not identified any suspects in the second. “The weekend before Halloween is always one of the busiest for our officers, and these major incidents stretched our resources thin during a critical time,” Addison said in a statement.

What Xi Jinping’s third term could mean for Canada-China relationsIn June, 2016, during an official visit to Canada, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi took umbrage when a reporter asked about his country’s human-rights record, berating her for posing a question “full of prejudice against China and an arrogance that comes from I don’t know where.”At the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was working hard to improve ties with Beijing – it was still more than two years before the Meng Wanzhou saga would derail this effort – and Mr. Wang’s angry response shocked many and made headlines around the world. Looking back, it’s clear this was not some gaffe but rather a preview of the far more aggressive “Wolf Warrior” diplomacy that was then emerging in Beijing. Canada has been on the sharp end of that policy for years now, and with Chinese President Xi Jinping securing a third term this week and figures such as Mr. Wang rising in prominence, it shows no signs of going away.

Climate Changed: Canada’s health system isn’t ready for new reality, say doctorsMontreal family doctor Claudel Pétrin-Desrosiers sees climate change as an all-encompassing "risk amplifier." Pétrin-Desrosiers, president of the Quebec chapter of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, is among a group of doctors who say Canada's health-care system isn't prepared for the worsening effects of climate change. Health Canada's own assessment of climate change and health published earlier this year says global heating is "already affecting the health of Canadians, and, without taking concerted action, will continue to result in injury, illness and death." The linkages between climate change and health are also the focus of the annual report from Canada's chief public health officer, Theresa Tam, released last week. Such reports, along with some actions at the provincial level, show there is increasing recognition of the health risks posed by climate change, Hackett says.

A: Having seen up close what Lowry did – with others – to elevate the franchise, I can appreciate his impact. Only a very few of the rugby players wore helmets - actually they looked like cloth caps- while footballers are dressed like transformers. I assume the same applies to men rugby players as well. Both were kind of expected to be lucky to appear in a regular season game initially, and progressed from assumed 905er to rotation guy (at least so far for Koloko). 3) As a writer covering the team, I'm sure you're aware of a lot of people working behind the scenes daily with the team that most fans have no idea about.

Milano's tweet kicked off an international movement that changed the culture of silence around sexual assault and harassment, leading to scores of accusations against powerful men. Uncovering a systemic problemIn Canada, the #MeToo movement was preceded years earlier by sexual assault charges laid against former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi in 2014, Khan said. When the #MeToo movement took off on social media, it sparked further conversations in Canada that sexual violence is a systemic problem. It released a report on students' experiences and understandings of sexual violence at the university's three campuses in 2019. A survivor of sexual violence herself, Wright began her advocacy work with University of Toronto student group Silence Is Violence.
