‘Our people are so alone:’ Iranian women express hope and despair amid violent protests


Soraya and Yasmin (not their real names) spoke to the Star to share the meaning and suffering of the protests in Iran. The protests began on Sept. 17 after Mahsa Amini, 22, died in custody of the Tehran morality police. On a visit to Tehran in 1996, she saw a police van packed with young girls who’d been arrested. As a young woman she became prominent in Iran in a career that might identify her if described here. “Small young girls are rough-handled by two-metre giants with battle gear, weapons and batons.
