Rizvi says blockade will be peaceful

BNP leaders Amir Khosru, Swapan remanded over police constable’s death in clashes
A Dhaka court has granted police six days to grill in custody BNP leaders Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Zahir Uddin Swapan over the killing of a police constable in clashes during the party’s Oct 28 rally. As many as 5 million leaders and activists of the party and its affiliates are accused in cases over false charges, which is unprecedented, according to him. After arresting Swapan, convenor of the party’s media cell, at a house in Gulshan on Thursday, police detained Khosru, a member of its policymaking Standing Committee, in the same area after midnight. Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas were arrested earlier in the case. The other accused include Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Bomb-like object found at Pabna’s Ishwardi rail junction
Authorities have discovered a bomb-like object at the Ishwardi railway junction in Pabna. The mysterious object, wrapped in red tape, was found on the railway tracks early Friday, said Subir Kumar Das, Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer. First shipments from India arrive to tame spiralling potato prices
The first-ever shipments of 77 tonnes of potatoes have arrived from India for domestic consumption in Bangladesh - traditionally an exporter of the root vegetable - amid government efforts to ease the price. A company named Gore International of Chapainawabganj brought two trucks of potatoes through Sona Masjid land port on Thursday after getting the government’s approval. The agriculture ministry said the government has granted permission for imports of 107,000 tonnes of potatoes in three days starting on Tuesday. Potatoes are now being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 80 per kg in Dhaka markets – the highest in the country's history. In India, one kg of potato costs 20 rupees.
