LONDON, July 5, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - A record number of Cabinet ministers lost their seats on Friday in Britain's general election, leaving only a couple of obvious contenders for the party leadership if Rishi Sunak resigns. A former defence secretary, she tried twice to become Tory leader, and was tipped to try again after Thursday's election, with Sunak expected to stand down. Other Tory casualties included Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, Transport and Science Secretary Michelle Donelan. "I think that we have seen in this election an astonishing ill-discipline within the party", said former Justice Secretary Robert Buckland, after losing his seat. "What is crystal clear to me tonight -- it is not so much that Labour won but that the Conservatives lost," he added.

BEIJING, July 4, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - China's weather agency expects extreme heat to persist across the country this summer as climate change pushes global temperatures higher, state media reported Thursday. The Asian nation is the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases that scientists say cause global warming and make extreme weather more frequent and intense. Swathes of northern China have already been baked by heat waves this summer, while unseasonably torrential rains have triggered deadly floods and landslides across much of the south. "Against the climatic backdrop of global warming, average temperatures will rise and the occurrence of high-temperature weather will tend to be frequent," the centre said, according to CCTV. Heat records at 20 local weather stations broke historical records, the report added.

Labour tipped for historic win as UK voters go to the pollsLONDON, July 4, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Britain voted Thursday in a general election widely expected to hand the opposition Labour party a landslide win and end nearly a decade-and-a-half of Conservative rule. That would almost certainly put Labour leader Keir Starmer, 61, in Downing Street, as leader of the largest party in parliament. Centre-left Labour is projected to win its first general election since 2005 by historic proportions, with a flurry of election-eve polls all forecasting its biggest-ever victory. But Starmer was taking nothing for granted as he urged voters not to stay at home. The Lib Dems were tipped to scoop dozens of seats -- up from their current tally of 15 -- while Nigel Farage's anti-immigrant Reform UK party was set to win a handful.

Bengaluru, India's tech hub of 14 million people, reeled under a water shortage this year and had to rely on tanker deliveries. That is adding urgency to public and private-sector efforts to conserve the resource, find ways to recycle waste water and reduce the country’s over-reliance on the annual monsoon, especially in the agricultural sector. Some industries are investing in waste water recycling and rain harvesting to cut their dependence on fresh water. Between 2021 and 2026, it plans to invest about $36 billion to ensure equitable water distribution, reuse of waste water and mapping of water bodies, the government has said. If we save just 10% of water used in agriculture, it will take care of the water problems of all the Indian cities."
