Freedom fighters’ rally in city tomorrow
DHAKA, July 17, 2024 (BSS) - A freedom fighters’ rally will be held in Dhaka city tomorrow protesting the 'derogatory remarks’ on the Liberation War and the heroic freedom fighters by the students agitating for quota reform. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque made this announcement at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club here this afternoon. Under the banner of Sramik-Karmachari-Peshajibi Samannay Parishad, he said, the gathering of brave freedom fighters, children of freedom fighters and workers, employees, professionals and intellectuals having the spirit of Liberation War will be held at the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and freedom fighters and worker leaders will be present at the rally. Freedom fighters - Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Home Ministry Benazir Ahmed, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Bir Bikram, Advocate Qamrul Islam and Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir – were, among others, present at the press conference.

JnU female students allowed to stay in hall after protests
Jagannath University’s female students were instructed to leave the hall by Wednesday afternoon, but after being confined to the office, the provost eventually allowed them to stay. JnU Vice-Chancellor Prof Sadeka Halim told bdnews24.com on Wednesday afternoon: “We have issued a notice for students to vacate the halls. The residential students of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, the only female hall, were also asked to vacate it by 4pm. Later, around 2:15pm, the residential students began protesting outside the provost’s office, demanding to stay back in the hall. Finally, around 3:45 pm, the provost issued a written notice allowing the students to stay in the hall.

Gaza civil defence says 48 killed in three strikes
GAZA STRIP, Palestinian Territories, July 17, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - The civil defence agency in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said three air strikes in less than one hour on Tuesday -- including on a school -- killed 48 people. Israel said it carried out two of the strikes that the civil defence agency said also left dozens more wounded. Five people were killed in a strike on people stood near a roundabout at Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, according to the official. At least seven schools, many of them managed by the United Nations when in operation, have now been the targets of Israeli strikes in 10 days. Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed at least 38,713 people, also mostly civilians, according to figures from Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry.

Vargas leads Bacon in campaign cash after Q2 in U.S. House race

He said the Appellate Division’s status quo has temporarily made ineffective a High Court verdict reinstating quotas in government jobs. The government doesn't want anyone dead while the BNP and the Jammat have taken over the movement and gathered at Shapla Chattar.

Police greenlighted to clear university halls, no leniency will be given: DB chief Harunor
Detective Branch chief Harunor Rashid says that police have approval to clear university residential halls and no leniency will be given to students who stay after the deadline. He made the remarks to the media outside the residence of the Dhaka University vice chancellor amid the ongoing quota reform protests around 4:45pm. The DB chief came to the TSC area on the campus in the afternoon to monitor the situation in the area. According to the instructions of the Dhaka University Syndicate, students have until 6pm to leave their residential halls. The protesters attempted to breach police barriers again and reach the TSC area, pelting law enforcers with bricks.

BFUJ expresses deep concern over attack on journalists, demands trial
DHAKA, July 17, 2024 (BSS) – BFUJ- Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists today expressed deep concern over the attacks on journalists during the ongoing quota reform movement and demanded bringing the people responsible for attacks under trial. “Journalists are being attacked while performing their professional duties to gather news on the situation developing over the quota system in government jobs. As the apex body of journalists, the BFUJ expresses deep concern over the attacks,” said a BFUJ statement issued here today. In the statement, BFUJ President Omar Faruque and Secretary General Dip Azad said journalists were attacked in different parts of the country in the last several days when they were collecting news of the movement demanding quota reform. Noting that cameras and vehicles of different media were vandalized, they said the journalist society will not accept attacks on media people while performing their professional duties.
