NEW DELHI, Dec 16, 2023 (BSS) - The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhitoday celebrated the Victory Day of Bangladesh in a befitting manner. The day's programmes began this morning with hoisting of the national flag onthe High Commission premises and placing floral wreaths at the portrait ofthe Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Besides, messages from the President, Prime Minister,Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out on theoccasion while a documentary on the Liberation War of Bangladesh was alsoscreened. He said that the main goal of the Liberation War was to build a liberal,developed, contributing, egalitarian and democratic state through completeemancipation. Officials and employees of the Bangladesh High Commission and expatriateBangladeshis were present at the event.

2 die in Padma river boat capsize
MUNSHIGANJ, Dec 16, 2023 (BSS) - A woman and a child died as a boat carrying 40 passengers sank in a tributary of Padma river near Hasail in Tongibari upazila of the district after collision with a bulkhead today. The deceased were Sifa Akhter, 15, daughter of Nazrul Bepari of Mandra village and Fahija Akhter, 6, daughter of Faruk Hossain of Fatullah in Narayanganj. Locals said the Hasail Bazar-bound Kheya boat capsized in the river after hitting the bulkhead in dark around 6.15 am while it was coming from Miah Bari ghat of Hasail char. After visiting the spot, Tongibari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Aslam Hossain said many passengers swam ashore after the incident. It is yet to be ascertained whether anyone is still missing, he said, adding that searching is going on.

Hasina joins Victory Day celebrations at Bangabhaban
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has cut a cake at a reception hosted by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the Bangabhaban to celebrate Victory Day. Shahabuddin and his wife Rebecca Sultana welcomed Hasina and other guests to the presidential palace on Saturday. Hasina exchanged pleasantries with the couple upon her arrival at 3:30pm. The celebrations kicked off with the national anthem after the president and his wife got on dais. Hasina was with other guests on the red carpet in front of the dais.

Balloon seller dies in cylinder blast amid Victory Day celebrations in Manikganj
A balloon seller has been killed after a gas cylinder exploded at the Manikganj district administration offices. The vendors were inflating the balloons using gas for a Victory Day event at a space designated for public gatherings, said ASI Mostafizur. But the gas cylinder exploded, critically injuring the two of them. Firefighters from the Sadar Upazila rescued them and took them to the Manikganj Sadar Hospital. Anwar's body is at the hospital morgue and legal action will be taken over the incident, said Habibul Hossain, chief of Manikganj Sadar Police Station.

2 die of electrocution while hoisting national flag in Gazipur
Two people have been electrocuted while hoisting the national flag in Gazipur's Tongi BSCIC area. The incident took place in front of IFL Garments, a building which is currently under construction in the Fakir Market area, around 7:30 am on Saturday. The dead have been identified as security guard Aynal, 35, and construction worker Ashraful, 45. They were both on duty at the factory's construction site.

Matthew Perry died of accidental ketamine overdose, examiner finds
LOS ANGELES, Dec 16, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - "Friends" actor Matthew Perry died from an accidental ketamine overdose, medical examiners said Friday, concluding their investigation into the death of the beloved but troubled TV star. "Matthew Perry's cause of death is determined to be from the acute effects of ketamine," the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office said in a statement. Perry wrote in his memoirs of how he had relied on using ketamine daily at points during his battles with addiction. "Has my name written all over it -- they might as well have called it 'Matty,'" he wrote, of ketamine. The examiner's report does not specify how or when Perry had consumed the fatal dose of ketamine.

Police complaint filed over ‘death threat’ against GM Quader
A ‘death threat’ has allegedly been made against Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and his family. A general diary was also filed over the incident at Dhaka’s Uttara West Police Station on Thursday. People can still be decent to each other
The stories in the media point out how we have lost our humanity. We have no regard for the welfare of others, and often we are downright cruel or mean. I have been struggling with serious back issues for the past two months and I’m now relegated to walking with a cane. When I tried to pay for parking at a parking garage kiosk, as I left, the man behind me said, “Excuse me, ma’am. You forgot to take your ticket.”These small acts of kindness remind me that our community hasn’t lost its humanity after all.
