Police have sent Adam Tamizi Haque, the recently-arrested controversial managing director of biscuit-maker AT Haque Limited, to a doctor to ensure the stability of his mental health. He will undergo an interrogation once the doctor declares him mentally stable, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch chief Harunor Rashid said on Sunday. The DB arrested Tamizi, who recently drew flak for burning his passport and threatening politicians in live social media videos, from his Gulshan residence on Saturday. He said that Tamizi was “speaking something incongruous” on social media and burnt down the passport of the country “he grew up in”. In October, his wife Saira Siddiqui Tanha started a case, accusing Tamizi of lying about his past marriages and beating her.

He later studied law at Middle Temple in London and returned in 1965 before starting his career as a lawyer. The eldest son of The Daily Ittefaq founder-editor Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah, he took charge of The Daily Ittefaq after his father’s death in 1969. His associations with Ittefaq were more influential in shaping his identity than his professional pursuits as a lawyer or politician. He was elected president of Bangladesh Sangbadpatra Parishad and member of the Press Council several times.

The Election Commission has summoned Amir Hossain Amu, the Awami League candidate for the Jhalakathi-2 parliamentary seat, to answer allegations of breaching the electoral code of conduct. The former industry minister has to appear before the EC in person at 3pm on Dec 15 to provide an explanation, according to a letter. Amu is accused of campaigning ahead of the assignment of symbols for the polls by soliciting votes at an event in his constituency on Dec 8. The schedule for the Jan 7 general election says that election symbols will be assigned on Dec 18, kicking off the designated period for campaigning. The EC letter to Amu states that the Awami League candidate was invited as chief guest to two different events in the district on Dec 8, the anniversary of the Pakistan Army’s attack on Jhalakathi in 1971.

Five women and two children have died after a wall collapsed during a pre-wedding ceremony in India’s Uttar Pradesh, local media reports. The death toll in the incident in Ghosi rose to seven when three more persons succumbed to their injuries a day after the incident on Saturday, The Indian Express reports, citing a senior official. Twenty-one people were undergoing treatment in different hospitals after the incident, the report said. Three women and a child died after a wall suddenly crashed down on them on Friday, district magistrate Arun Kumar said. The state’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared ex gratia payments of Rs 200,000 to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 for all those injured.

BRAHMANBARIA, Dec 9, 2023 (BSS) - Two passengers of a CNG-run auto rickshaw were killed and another was injured after being hit by a drum truck on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Bertala area under Sarail upazila of the district today. The deceased were identified as Abdur Rahman, 55, son of late Abdul Khalek of Shonaisa village of the Sadar upazila and Iqbal Hossain, 32, son of Ansar Ali of Subidpur village under Lakhai upazila of Habiganj district. The injured were taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where Iqbal Hossain died while undergoing treatment. Police seized the drum truck but its driver escaped, he said. The bodies have been sent to Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue for post-mortem, he added.

GAIBANDHA, Dec 9, 2023 (BSS) - Two youths were killed as their bike hit a roadside tree in Sundarganj upazila of the district on Friday evening. The deceased were identified as Sazid Miah, 18, and Jewel Rana, 18, hailed from Rangpur district. Police said the accident took place in Hannan Mour area of the upazila around 6.00 pm when the reckless bike hit a roadside tree, leaving its rider Sazid dead on the spot and Jewel injured critically. Jewel died on the way to Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-Charge of Sundarganj Police Station Azmiruzzaman confirmed the matter.
