Bangladesh has registered 742 new hospitalisations due to dengue in a day, taking the tally this year to 313,706. The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease rose by three to 1,632 in a 24-hour count on Sunday. Of the patients newly hospitalised with the disease, 156 cases were in Dhaka, while 586 were outside the capital. Currently, 2,970 patients are hospitalised with dengue. The dengue outbreak has been significantly worse this year than in previous years.

Sima and Roman live in a second-floor flat of the building, her younger sister Shaheda Begum said. Sima smelt gas on Friday night, but did not take any safety measures, said Shaheda. After waking up in the morning, Sima lit the kitchen stove and the fire spread throughout the flat. Neighbours rushed them to Narayanganj General Hospital from where they were transferred to the burn institute in Dhaka. Fakharuddin Ahmed, an official at Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said they learnt about the incident from other sources, but no one from the locality or the family informed them.

Bangladeshi cricketers Marufa Akhter and Rabeya Khan are set to be featured in the auction list of the second edition of the Women's Premier League of India. The league authorities on Saturday released a list of names for the auction, which is scheduled to be held in Mumbai on Dec 9, reports bdnews24.com. The reserve price for these prowess players has been set at Rs 3 million each. The highest reserve price has been set at Rs 5 million for West Indies' Deandra Dottin and Ireland's Kim Garth. Amid the shadow cast by the BNP and like-minded parties' boycott calls, the Election Commission has once again adjusted the count of participating parties in the 12th national elections. During a briefing at the poll regulator's Agargaon headquarters on Saturday, EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath announced that 29 out of the 44 registered parties in Bangladesh are set to contest the elections. Initially, the EC had stated that 30 parties would participate after the immediate count following the nomination form submission deadline on Thursday. However, the next day, Ashok Debnath revealed that data collected nationwide indicated that 32 parties had submitted nomination forms for their candidates. But that figure, too, was updated the next day, with the EC saying that 2,713 candidates had filed nomination papers.

Bangladesh has been elected to the governing council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the United Nations' shipping agency. During the voting held in London on Friday, 40 countries were elected through a secret ballot to the IMO Council, responsible for overseeing the organisation's activities, reports bdnews24.com. The IMO, headquartered in London, is responsible for regulating the safety and security of international shipping and preventing pollution, boasting 175 member states. Bangladesh was competing against 25 other countries to join the executive council for 2024-25 under category (c). The South Asian nation bagged 128 out of 168 votes to secure a position on the elite council.

A truck driver’s assistant, who was burnt in an arson attack in Khagrachari amid the BNP’s antigovernment protests before election, has died in hospital care. Relatives of Belal Hossain, 35, said he died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Saturday afternoon. Driver Ishak Mia, 28, who was also injured in the incident on Nov 27, said two unidentified arsonists vandalised and torched the truck after blocking the road. Ishak and Belal were transporting rice from a warehouse in Chattogram. “Although I managed to escape, Belal was stuck inside,” said Ishak.

RAJSHAHI, Dec 2, 2023 (BSS) - Around 2.20 lakh farmers will get incentives for cultivation and production of high yielding and hybrid varieties of boro rice in Rajshahi region during the current 2023-2024 season. Of them, one lakh farmers will get five kilograms of high yielding seed, ten kilograms of DAP and ten kilograms of MoP each, while 1.20 lakh farmers will get two kilograms of hybrid seeds. Under the incentives programme, the farmers-friendly government will provide fertilizer and seeds to the farmers free of cost to encourage them towards boosting boro rice. This year, 68,000 farmers will get the incentives in Rajshahi, while 88,000 in Naogaon, 39,000 in Chapainawabganj and 45,000 in Natore districts. Shamsul Wadud said distribution of the incentives is progressing fast and the distribution programmes will be completed successfully within the shortest possible time.

The Election Commission wants to move some Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) to other places before the 12th parliamentary elections scheduled for January 7. Currently, the UNOs are serving as the assistant returning officers for the 12th parliamentary election. EC Secretary Jahangir Alam said: "We need to make realistic changes. After the election schedule is announced, the commission can approve moving officials. The Election Commission also asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to transfer all officers-in-charge (OC) of police stations across the country in phases to conduct the election in a fair manner.
