According to the statistics, one-fourth of all candidates intending to contest the polls are independent. An average of nine candidates are set to contest each seat at the elections. Initially, the ruling Awami League submitted party nominations for 298 seats, and later, it nominated two candidates each for five seats. In contrast, the Jatiya Party, the opposition party in parliament, submitted nominations for 286 seats, followed by additional nominations of two candidates each for 18 seats. In cases where multiple nominations exist for a single seat, the EC will finalise one candidate, automatically eliminating the others.

COX'S BAZAR, Dec 1, 2023 (BSS)- Cox's Bazar Express, the first commercial train between Dhaka and Cox's Bazar, started operating from the iconic railway station of Cox's Bazar with 1030 passengers today. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated the railway project at the newly constructed iconic station in Cox's Bazar on November 11. Humayun Kabir inaugurated the train journey at the Cox's Bazar train station this morning. Golam Rabbani, Station Master of Cox's Bazar Iconic Railway Station said the first train left Cox's Bazar Iconic Railway Station for Dhaka at 12:30 pmtoday with 1030 passengers. Another train from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar will leave Kamalapur station at 10:30 tonight, he said.

BAGHDAD, Dec 1, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - A mine blast and ambush killed at least 11 civilians in eastern Iraq, two security officials said, in an attack which the provincial governor blamed on jihadists. The attack, in Diyala province, occurred on Thursday evening and targeted a minibus returning the civilians from an electoral meeting, an interior ministry official, who asked for anonymity, told AFP.

The governing body of Bangladesh cricket has formed a three-strong special committee led by Enayet Hossain Siraj, the chairman of the BCB's Working Committee. The other members of the committee are BCB Director Mahbub Anam and former international captain Akram Khan. Following the World Cup, team director Khaled Mahmud and head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe submitted their reports to the BCB. Despite going into the World Cup with high hopes, the Bangladesh team fell short, winning only two out of nine matches and displaying little resilience in their defeats. Looking ahead, the Bangladesh team is scheduled to tour New Zealand after the ongoing Test series against the Kiwis at home.

DHAKA, Nov 29, 2023 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) today issued a statement saying that the incumbent members of parliament (MPs) will not have to resign for contesting in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections as independent candidates. The statement was issued following several media reports that if any sitting MP elected with party ticket want to contest in the polls independently, s/he has to resign from the post of Member of Parliament and has to submit signatures of one percent voters of their constituency as per the Representation of the People Order-1972, said an official handout here today. The statement also said, if any independent candidate was previously elected as a member of parliament, it will not necessary for him/her to provide the list. "In that case, the MPs elected with party tickets will not have to resign from their posts to take part in the JS polls as independent candidates," the statement said, adding, MPs elected through a party ticket, as an independent candidate, or from reserved seats, will be able to take part in the elections staying in their positions.

The BNP has expelled Rabeya Siraj, the assistant weavers’ affairs secretary of the party's central committee, and Md Mahabubul Hasan, a member of the party in Jamalpur's Dewanganj Upazila, for breaching "party discipline". Local BNP leaders were concerned about Rabeya publicly backing her daughter's campaign in defiance of the party policies. NOAKHALI, Nov 29, 2023 (BSS) - A woman was beaten to death reportedly by her neighbour over a trivial matter in Jagodananda village under Ward No-5 of Dhansiri union in Kabirhat upazila of the district today. The deceased was identified as Aleya Begum, 50, wife of Soleman Mia, a resident in Jagodananda village under Ward No-5 of Dhansiri union of the upazila. Later, local people rescued her and took her to Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead around 8:30 am, he said. Salim, the son of the victim, complained and said that Rezia Begum's ducks next to their house eat their paddy. The body was kept at the Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital morgue for autopsy, OC added.

The government has accepted the resignation of two technocrat ministers and one state minister 10 days after they submitted them on orders fromPrime Minister Sheikh Hasina as part of the process to reconstitute the cabinet ahead of the parliamentary elections. The resignation of three advisers to the prime minister took effect as well, a cabinet official said on Wednesday.

The Election Commission has been finalising the list of more than 42,000 poll centres and thousands of people comprising the panel of polling officers for the upcoming 12th general election. The commission asked for a tentative list of presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers and the final list of polling centres once it announced the election schedule. Traditionally, the Election Commission publishes the list of polling centres at least 25 days before election day, said EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath. As such, it asked the returning officers to send the final list by Dec 12, he said. Election officers would receive training before conducting the voting, he added.

A low pressure area has formed over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas, which is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm. The current low pressure will become more well-marked by Wednesday (Today) and might turn into a depression, meteorologist Monowar Hossain has said. "We'll understand its path and nature better after it forms, and then we'll give out weather warnings based on how it progresses," he added. The India Meteorological Department forecasts that the low pressure might turn into a deep depression and a cyclone by Dec 2. The cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are named by the World Meteorological Organisation's regional cyclone agency ESCAP.
