The agreements were signed by Sharifa Khan, Senior Secretary, Economic Relations Division (ERD), the government of Bangladesh and Abdoulaye Seck, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, on behalf of Bangladesh and the World Bank, respectively. "Bangladesh is an important partner for the World Bank toward its vision of a world free of poverty on a livable planet. Since the country's independence, the World Bank and Bangladesh have had an impactful partnership that lifted millions of Bangladeshi people out of poverty," said Abdoulaye Seck, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan. It will help improve antenatal services for women, with a target of over 250,000 women receiving at least four checkups during pregnancy. The World Bank has been amongst the first development partners to support Bangladesh and has committed more than $40 billion in grants, interest-free, and concessional credits since the country's independence.

BNP announces another 48-hour transport blockade starting Sunday
The BNP has announced another 48-hour nationwide transport blockade as part of its efforts to oust the ruling government. The blockade by road, rail, and river will be in force from 6 am on Sunday to 6 am on Tuesday, said BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a virtual briefing on Thursday. Dollar depreciation a prudent move: BB
DHAKA, Nov 23, 2023 (BSS) - Bangladesh Bank (BB) has lauded the recentdecision of Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Dealers' Association (Bafeda)and the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) to depreciate thedollar by Taka 0.50. Highlighting the positive position of all banks' Net Open Position,Haque emphasized that there is an ample supply of dollars. Therefore,BAFEDA's decision to depreciate the dollar by Taka 0.50 per dollar wasdeemed prudent, he added. This marks the first adjustment in the dollar price since August 2021when the Bangladesh Bank was setting the price. Since September of thesame year, BAFEDA and ABB have been jointly determining dollar pricesto stabilize the exchange rate, making this recent move a significantstep in managing the currency's valuation.

Bus torched near BNP headquarters in Dhaka amid blockade
A group of arsonists have torched a bus near BNP’s central office on the first day of the sixth round of transport blockades called by the opposition party. On Thursday, an Ajmeri Glory Paribahan bus was set on fire at Dhaka’s Nightingale Junction around 12 pm, said fire service personnel. Two units from Siddique Bazar Fire Station were dispatched to douse the fire, according to Talha Bin Jashim, an officer at the Fire Service Control Room. Hayatul Islam, the deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Motijheel Division, said, “The bus was completely gutted. However, no one was injured.”The police are trying to identify the perpetrators from the CCTV footage, he added.

EC invites 38 countries to observe national polls
The Election Commission has invited election management bodies from 38 countries and organisations to observe the upcoming 12th national polls in Bangladesh, according to website bdnews24.com. EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said that formal invitations have been extended to all countries and organisations that expressed their interest in election monitoring following the announcement of the election schedule. The general election is scheduled to take place on Jan 7, 2024. The commission will scrutinise the nomination papers from Dec 1 to Dec 4. The countries invited by the EC are India, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Australia, Canada, France, Georgia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, Egypt, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Senegal, Thailand, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Tunisia, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, and Singapore.
