"Bangladesh is an important partner for the World Bank toward its vision of a world free of poverty on a livable planet. Since the country's independence, the World Bank and Bangladesh have had an impactful partnership that lifted millions of Bangladeshi people out of poverty," said Abdoulaye Seck, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan. It will help improve antenatal services for women, with a target of over 250,000 women receiving at least four checkups during pregnancy. The World Bank has been amongst the first development partners to support Bangladesh and has committed more than $40 billion in grants, interest-free, and concessional credits since the country's independence.

The BNP has announced another 48-hour nationwide transport blockade as part of its efforts to oust the ruling government. The blockade by road, rail, and river will be in force from 6 am on Sunday to 6 am on Tuesday, said BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a virtual briefing on Thursday. The announcement was made before the end of the BNP’s transport blockade on Thursday. The BNP has not scheduled any major protest programmes for Friday or Saturday.

Therefore,BAFEDA's decision to depreciate the dollar by Taka 0.50 per dollar wasdeemed prudent, he added. A group of arsonists have torched a bus near BNP’s central office on the first day of the sixth round of transport blockades called by the opposition party. On Thursday, an Ajmeri Glory Paribahan bus was set on fire at Dhaka’s Nightingale Junction around 12 pm, said fire service personnel. Two units from Siddique Bazar Fire Station were dispatched to douse the fire, according to Talha Bin Jashim, an officer at the Fire Service Control Room. Hayatul Islam, the deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Motijheel Division, said, “The bus was completely gutted. However, no one was injured.”The police are trying to identify the perpetrators from the CCTV footage, he added.

The Election Commission has invited election management bodies from 38 countries and organisations to observe the upcoming 12th national polls in Bangladesh, according to website bdnews24.com. EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said that formal invitations have been extended to all countries and organisations that expressed their interest in election monitoring following the announcement of the election schedule. The general election is scheduled to take place on Jan 7, 2024. The commission will scrutinise the nomination papers from Dec 1 to Dec 4.
