Ishrat cited the abolishment of the death penalty in 112 countries and argued that it be declared unconstitutional in Bangladesh. Many developed countries along with neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Nepal have abolished the penalty, Ishrat said, adding that Bangladesh was a signatory to an international law banning the death penalty. Unsure about when the writ petition will be heard in court, he said: “The break starts in a few days, so I can’t tell whether it will be held in the meantime or in January.”The Supreme Court is set to take a two-week break from Dec 19.

On this day in 1971, the valiant freedom fighters liberated Gopalganj by defeating the Pakistani occupation forces. Marking the day, a discussion was held on the occasion at the hall room of Sadar Upazila Parishad office. The speakers commemorated the Great Liberation War and prayed for the peace of the souls of the martyred freedom fighters. From the morning of this day in 1971, groups of freedom fighters entered the district town and hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh.

The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has returned the body of a Bangladeshi youth who was killed near the Thakurgaon border three days after his death. Feroz Wazed, chief of Haripur Police Station, told reporters that the 26-year-old’s body was handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) around 2 pm on Thursday. At least two Bangladeshi youths were killed when the BSF opened fire at them on the Kanthaldangi border inside India. Earlier, a bipartisan flag meeting was held between the BSF and BGB, where the BSF said that they would return the body once legal proceedings were completed. However, the BSF returned the body three days later.

Controversial religious speaker Amir Hamza has been released on bail from Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur. He was released on bail in both cases on Thursday around 11:30 am. Hamza was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes unit on May 24, 2021, on charges of spreading extremism among the youth through his religious sermons. On May 5, 2021, a 22-year-old named Abu Saqib was arrested in front of Dhaka’s National Parliament area. Saqib said he was planning to attack the parliament building with a sword after being provoked by Hamza’s sermons.

Arsonists set fire to as many as 12 vehicles across the country on the first day of BNP’s 48-hour nationwide transport blockade, the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence said. Most of the vehicles were set ablaze in Dhaka in the 24 hours to 6 am on Thursday, the fire service said in a media briefing. The fire service reported a total of 266 arson attacks across the country since the BNP’s Dhaka rally broke out in violence on Oct 28. Among the 12 vehicles burnt on the first day of the ongoing blockade, six incidents occurred in Dhaka, two in Gazipur, three in Chattogram and one in Sirajganj. The vehicles include six buses, two covered vans, a truck and three pick-up vans.

GAIBANDHA, DEC 07, 2023 (BSS)-On this day in 1971, valiant freedom fighters (FFs) liberated Gaibandha town defeating the Pakistani occupation forces who entered into the Gaibandha town on April 17 in 1971 and stationed themselves at wireless office and then Helal Park now Shah Abdul Hamid Stadium. As the news spread, the people of Gaibandha town rushed to the ground, rejoiced liberation of their motherland by chanting slogans ‘Joy Bangla’ with the FFs and gave reception to the FFs for their heroic achievement. And thus, the Gaibandha town was liberated from the hands of Pakistan Army on this day in 1971, said Mahbub Elahi Ranju, BirProtik. Later, a discussion was also held at the stage of Independence Square of the town with freedom fighter Mahmudul Haque Sahjada, coordinator of the committee in the chair. Ikbal Maju and freedom fighter Ali Akbar addressed the function among others.
