DHAKA, Dec 8, 2023 (BSS) - Salman F Rahman, advisor to the prime minister onprivate industry and investment, has participated in the "Global EconomicPolicy Forum 2023" as a panel member of global experts. The Indian Department of Economic Affairs and the Confederation of IndianIndustry (CII) jointly organised the two-day event in Delhi on December 7-8,said a press release here today. The theme of the forum was "Strategizing global prosperity amidst a poly-crisis prevailing at present". The Forum was chaired by Indian Finance and Corporate Affairs MinisterNirmala Sitharaman. Salman F Rahman addressed the forum on "Inspirations from the Growth andDevelopment Journey of Bangladesh".

The UN said Friday it hopes the multinational security force heading to Haiti to help combat violent gangs will deploy before April. Ulrika Richardson, the United Nations’ resident coordinator in Haiti, said the force should be around 2,500 strong, though the composition has not been finalised. The UN Security Council gave the go-ahead in early October for the Kenya-led mission to help the overwhelmed Haitian police. – Gang control –Rampant gang violence is just one of the challenges facing the poorest state in the Americas, whose political, economic and public health systems are in tatters. Haiti has descended into “absolute, brutal violence”, Richardson said.

India bans onion exports until March 2024
The Indian government has banned the exports of onion until March next year to increase its availability in the domestic market and rein in the prices, NDTV reports. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade, or DGFT, said the overseas sale of onion, however, would be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the government to other countries based on their request. The order took effect from Friday after it was issued on Thursday. The DGFT added that shipments of onion, whose loading had commenced before this notification, are allowed to be exported, the NDTV report added.

PM calls for vigilance against opposition attempts to foil elections
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged her party leaders and activists to be wary of attempts to undermine the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections through violence and chaos. Hasina, the representative of the Tungipara-Kotalipara constituency, condemned the violence perpetrated by opposition groups as part of their efforts to ‘disrupt the electoral process’. She called out the “lack of leadership” within the BNP, saying, “They thought there would be no election this time. But the election is happening.”The prime minister also accused the BNP of “plotting a famine” in the country with the support of a few foreign countries. After the two-hour meeting, the premier returned to her hometown, Tungipara.

India extends onion export restrictions to Mar 31
India has extended restrictions on onion exports until the end of March next year in a bid to ensure adequate domestic availability and stabilise prices -- a move that could impact the prices of the commodity in Bangladesh. The restriction, which mandates a minimum export price of $800 per tonne, was initially implemented in October and was scheduled to be in place until Dec 31. However, on Thursday, India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced that the export policy would now be effective until Mar 31.

Bangladesh to provide digital health card for all citizens to ease medicare
Each patient will receive a digital card where all information about doctor's appointments, health conditions, and tests will be preserved. Patients have to carry these cards while going to hospitals, where doctors will be able to access their details through the card. Initially, this health card will be distributed under a pilot project in Gopalganj’s Muksudpur and Manikganj’s Singair Upazila. After government hospitals, private hospitals and medical clinics will also be added to the initiative. The Medical Information Services or MIS of DGHS is implementing the project.

Govt introduces emergency healthcare services at 500 health centres: Maleque
DHAKA, Dec 7, 2023 (BSS) - Health Minister Zahid Maleque today said the government has introduced emergency healthcare services for 24 hours at 500 public healthcare certres to reduce child and maternal mortality rate in the country. "We will introduce emergency healthcare services at 400 health centres more in phases," he told a discussion at the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall here, an official release said today. Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Prof. Dr. Md. Maternal mortality rate will be reduced by 70 percent by 2030 while children mortality rate will be cut by half during the same period." He laid emphasis on stopping early marriage, encouraging institutional delivery and introduction of emergency healthcare services for round the clock to achieve the target of reducing child maternal mortality rate.
