Amu, also 14-party alliance coordinator, was addressing a rally “Tarunyer Joyjatra” organised by Awami Jubo League marking its founding chairman Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani’s 85th birthday. Jubo League chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash chaired the rally while AL joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, writer and journalist Swadesh Roy also spoke. Jubo League general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil conducted the rally.

RAJSHAHI, Dec 4, 2023 (BSS) - Police in an overnight anti-crime drive arrested an alleged drug peddler with one kilogram (Kg) of heroin in the district. The arrested was identified as Sabbir Rahman alias Sakim, 38, son of late Shafiqul Islam of Premtali Kathalbaria village under Godagari Upazila in the district, police said this morning. On a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid in Sakim's locality and nabbed him with the drugs from around 11.30 pm on Sunday. A case was recorded with Godagari Police Station in this connection and the arrestee with the heroin was sent to the court this morning.

Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh has shrugged off fears of the United States hitting Bangladesh with trade sanctions under new global labour rights policy. “We are in a good position in terms of ensuring work environment and labour rights in new industrial establishments,” he added. It has provisions of different sanctions, including ban on trade, on countries where labour rights are violated, workers are threatened or attacked. The commerce secretary spoke to the media after a meeting with businessmen from different levels and the labour secretary at his office. Tapan said it was a “regular meeting” to discuss the progress of implementing the national action plan to ensure labour rights.

The High Court has rejected a petition challenging the law that bars government employees from running for parliament until at least three years after retirement. As a result, no former military or civil government member may contest the upcoming general election until the allotted time has passed. The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque issued the decision on Monday, scrapping a petition put before the court in January. Barrister Tania Amir and Advocate Prabir Niyogi represented the petitioners in court, while Barrister Khan Mohammad Shameem Aziz represented the Election Commission. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General Amit Dasgupta represented the state.

DHAKA, Dec 4, 2023 (BSS) - The 60th death anniversary of the champion of democracy and one of the greatest leaders of undivided India Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy will be observed in the country tomorrow in a befitting manner. He served as the premier of Bengal in British India and was the fifth Prime Minister of Pakistan. President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages today paid rich tributes to the memory of Suhrawardy marking his death anniversary. Awami League (AL) will pay tributes to the late leader by placing wreaths on his grave adjacent to the High Court at 9am tomorrow. In the statement, Quader called upon the leaders and workers of all levels of Awami League and its affiliated organizations to observe the death anniversary of Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy with due dignity and respect.

As many as five nominations for Dhaka–1, 2 and 3 constituencies have been cancelled, according to Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman. He confirmed the poll update on Monday, mentioning that three other nominations have been put on hold for the parliamentary seats. Among the nine candidates for Dhaka–1 (Dohar-Nawabganj) constituency, the nominations of Muktijot’s Abdur Rahim and National People’s Party’s Abdul Hakim were suspended. The seven remaining nominations, including those of Awami League’s Salman Fazlul Rahman and Jatiya Party’s Salma Islam, were deemed valid. The nomination of Md Farooq, another independent candidate was cancelled due to unpaid electricity bills worth Tk 3,65,000 and loan default.
