12 killed in attack on party in Mexico: officials
SALVATIERRA, Mexico, Dec 18, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - At least 12 people were killed and another dozen were wounded in an attack early Sunday on a pre-Christmas party in central Mexico, authorities in the state of Guanajuato said. The violence occurred in the town of Salvatierra, reportedly at a hacienda, or ranch, that can be rented out for festivities. "So far 12 people are reported dead," the state's prosecutor's office said on X, the former Twitter. It's a horror what is happening in Salvatierra," Tierra Negra member Carlos Silva wrote on social media. Guanajuato is one of the most violent states in Mexico, due in large part to the presence and activity of criminal gangs -- including a pair of feuding drug cartels.

Two passengers still missing a day after deadly Munshiganj boat capsize
At least two people have been missing since a passenger trawler sank in a tributary of the river Padma near Hasail after being hit by a bulk carrier in Munshiganj’s Tongibari on Saturday. The passenger boat was heading towards Hasail market from the Miabari pier of Char Hasail on Saturday evening when the disaster struck. Two girls aged 14 and 6 died in the incident.

1,896 candidates to fight it out for ballot amid BNP’s boycott as AL, Jatiya Party seal deal
The opposition party contested the 2018 election, but after losing, it alleged widespread irregularities and decided not to take part in polls without a caretaker government. As the Awami League refused its demand to step down, the BNP launched a series of hartals, or shutdowns, and transport blockades. As many as 1,567 candidates, including from only 12 registered parties, joined the election in 2014, while the number of parties in the election this time is 28. To keep the Jatiya Party in the polls, the Awami League has agreed to leave 26 seats where the ruling party will support the Jatiya Party candidates. It has also allowed six candidates of the 14-Party Alliance to run with the party’s boat symbol.

36 Indian, eight Russian soldiers honoured

"The Russian occupying forces attacked with the Iskander-K cruise missile, the Kh-59 guided air missile..., as well as 20 Shahed-type strike drones," the Ukrainian air force said in a statement. Russia in turn said that it had foiled 33 drone attacks in three border regions with Ukraine. Drone attacks have been almost daily occurrences in Russia's border regions, though mass attacks are less common. The capital Moscow and its outskirts have also been targets of Ukrainian drone attacks.

Awami League-Jatiya Party bonhomie hits a hurdle: AL leaders are running as independents
Sanjida Khanam of the Awami League secured a significant victory in the Dhaka-4 seat during the ninth parliamentary polls. However, in the subsequent two elections, the Awami League ceded this constituency to Jatiya Party's Sayed Abu Hossain Babla. The Awami League has nominated Sanjida again, while Awlad Hossain, a former assistant private secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has decided to run as an independent candidate for the seat after he failed to secure a party ticket. As talks continue between the two parties over sharing seats in the Jan 7 vote, the Awami League may ask Sanjida to step aside for Babla again. In that case, Awlad sees it as an opportunity for him to win the seat with the votes of the Awami League supporters.
