Amid India's recent ban on onion export, the government has permitted local traders to import the commodity from 10 other countries to control the soaring prices in Bangladesh, reports bdnews24.com. However, many local traders who were expecting to make windfall profits are now fearing losses due to the falling prices of onions in Bangladesh. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, traders have been granted permits to import onions from at least 10 countries following the sudden increase in India's export duty since August. In the coming days, Bangladesh expects to import onions from China, Egypt, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Qatar, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. However, Bangladeshi onion traders say they will not use the import permits they received from the government for fear of incurring losses.

Elizabeth Bennet of “Pride and Prejudice,” of course. Seriously, do you know anyone who admits to identifying with the tiresome Mrs. Bennet? It’s a sobering realization: I lately do, albeit uneasily, identify with these foolish characters, and I’m wondering if Jane Austen, who was born 248 years ago on Dec. 16, would have hated me — or even killed me off. The fear that, having mocked me, Austen would have had no compunction about killing me off is sobering for a lifelong Austen fan who also happens to be a hypochondriac. Pamela Jane (pamelajane@pamelajane.com) is, with Deborah Guyol, author of “Pride and Prejudice and Kitties: A Cat-Lover’s Romp Through Jane Austen’s Classic” (Skyhorse, 2015).

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — When United Nations climate talks wrap up at some point this week in Dubai, big promises will likely be made about how the world is going to combat climate change, caused by the burning of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal. Rich countries promised to channel $100 billion a year to developing countries for green technologies by 2020. And as climate change worsens, experts say the funds promised are not enough. Research published by climate economist Nicholas Stern found that developing countries likely need $2 trillion for climate action every year by 2030. The Paris Agreement is widely considered the single biggest U.N. achievement in efforts to confront climate change.

Awami League has warned the party’s allies will not be able to ‘win comfortably’ as they had before. “We will compete and our allies have to compete as well,” the ruling party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader said at a press conference at the party president’s political office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi on Tuesday. You must contest in the election and earn a result.”The senior Awami League leader’s statement comes amid slow progress on a seat-sharing agreement between the party and its allies in the 14-Party Alliance. Quader said his statement was not only directed at the alliance, but also at the Jatiya Party which has allied with the Awami League in two of the three elections since 2008. Even when the two parties were not formally allied, they had a seat-sharing agreement in the remaining general election.

After four weeks of detailed court testimony, the California jury found against the Google Play monopoly on all counts," Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said on X (formerly Twitter). Smartphone companies can install the Android app for free under the condition that the Play app store remains on the home page and that other Google offers are pre-installed. During the trial it emerged that Google worked aggressively in other ways to make sure that the Google Play app store was the only conduit for making payments to third party apps such as Fortnite and other games. A sizable chunk of app store revenue comes from video games and Epic Games has long sought to have payments for its mobile games, such as Fortnite, take place outside the Google or Apple app stores that take commissions as high as 30 percent. But the trial exposed that Google rakes in tens of billions of dollars of revenue through the app store.
