JASAD President Hasanul Haq Inu has ‘politely declined’ the seat-sharing deal put forward by the Awami League for its partners in the 14 Party Alliance ahead of the general election. In response, Inu called for the Awami League to give up more seats to the alliance and to ensure that no Awami League leaders would run in those constituencies as independent candidates. He has also called for a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the chief of the ruling party. The Awami League and the 14 Party Alliance have partnered since the 2008 election for the polls. In the three polls held since, two also included the Jatiya Party as an ally.

As Bangladesh gears up for elections early next month, the ‘democracy-exporting’ Americans are on the overdrive again. For, Chinese influence cannot be curbed by getting in an Islamist regime in Bangladesh. Is that what you want?”That’s exactly what happened when Mubarak was deposed after the Arab Spring in 2011. Bangladesh may not be as closed a society as those in the Middle East, but it has a strong Islamist presence. Biden’s Arab Spring desire in Dhaka won’t be any better than Barack Obama’s Middle Eastern nightmare.

Amid India's recent ban on onion export, the government of Bangladesh has permitted local traders to import the commodity from ten other countries. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, traders have been granted permits to import onions from at least ten countries following the sudden increase in India's export duty since August. In the coming days, Bangladesh expects to import onions from China, Egypt, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Qatar, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the USA. However, Bangladeshi onion traders say they will not use the import permits they received from the government for fear of incurring losses. The government said Bangladesh has imported more than 700,000 tons of onions, including 600,000 tons from India, in the current financial year, against import permits for over 2 million tons.

The NCAA on Wednesday began notifying member schools that two-time transfers will be eligible to participate in their chosen sports, at least temporarily, and bypass the "year in residency" rule. The lawsuit was filed by the states of West Virginia, Colorado, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee and stated the requirement of two-time transfers to sit out a year violated antitrust law. The decision applies to all student athletes under NCAA jurisdiction in the United States. One athlete immediately impacted is West Virginia men's basketball player RaeQuan Battle, who transferred from Montana State after playing two seasons for the Big Sky school. West Virginia would be happy to see Battle on the court as he averaged 17.7 points last season while leading Montana State to the NCAA Tournament.

At 8 am on Thursday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital soared to 315 PM, a hazardous level. Dhaka currently ranks second on the list of cities with the worst air quality, behind Pakistan’s Lahore. The air quality is determined by the concentration of suspended fine dust (particulate matter or PM-10) and ultrafine dust (PM2.5), measured in micrograms per cubic metre (ppm). Dhaka consistently tops the list of cities with polluted air, according to IQAir, an international air quality technology company. Recent IQAir data showed Dhaka’s air fluctuating between ‘unhealthy’, ‘very unhealthy’, and ‘hazardous’ levels over the past three days.
