Former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. also filed his candidacy for the top post, having formalized speculation that he would seek the presidency only a day earlier. I just asked him, ‘Don’t leave me behind,’” quipped Lacson, who, unlike Sotto, did not rank high in the latest Pulse Asia survey of potential presidential and vice presidential candidates. He said he had planned to team up with President Duterte had the latter pushed through with his declared intention to run for vice president. Asked if he would settle for Sen. Bong Go, who filed his own COC for vice president on Saturday in Mr. Duterte’s stead, Marcos Jr. replied: “How will that go? Only Sotto filed a COC for vice president, bringing the total vice presidential aspirants to nine.

Taal Volcano’s sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emissions reached a new record-high on Tuesday, as volcanologists cautioned the public to refrain from entering the volcano’s permanent danger zone. “Recent degassing at the Taal main crater has been visibly moderate to strong and generated steam-laden plumes as tall as 3,000 meters above the Taal Volcano Island,” volcanologists said. “Current SO2 parameters indicate high levels of magmatic degassing from the main crater that could drive explosive activity,” the advisory warned. Alert level 2In August, Phivolcs detected a sudden inflation of the volcano island through its GPS monitoring, which it said might indicate renewed pressurization of the “subsurface hydrothermal system” due to the continuous degassing of magma. Phivolcs recommends that entry into the volcano island and Taal’s permanent danger zone, especially the vicinity of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, as well as human activities on Taal Lake, must be prohibited.

Fans power China's lucrative idol economy, boosting stars on social media and buying merchandise that they promote at shops like this. But many fans say they derive pleasure from seeing their idols flourish and have found a sense of community from the shared online space. "Chinese youth lack other types of idols," said Fang Kecheng, communications professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. China's broadcast regulator last month banned performers with "lapsed morals" and "incorrect political views" as well as what it termed "sissy men" — an androgynous aesthetic popularized by Korean boy bands, and imitated by male Chinese idols like Xiao. Chinese entertainers wanting mainstream success have little choice but to agree with the state, whose disapproval can ultimately sink their careers.

Today, India is trying to promote jute as a fabric for a sustainable future with the government issuing a mandate that all grains and 20 percent of sugar should be packed in jute sacks. Leading homegrown designers, such as Ashish Soni and Pawan Aswani, also use jute blends for their fashion lines. At Meghna Jute Mills, hundreds of barefoot workers labor in a vast dingy hall covered in fine, fibrous dust across eight-hour shifts, 24 hours a day. "Jute has a potentially huge international market," said company president Supriya Das, as noisy machines rolled out long strands of shimmery yarn behind him. Nearly all the world's jute is grown in this region or in Bangladesh because of the conducive humid climate and availability of cheap labor.

Oil shockAs if the pandemic were not enough, now comes higher crude oil prices. Whether OPEC+ will allow oil to breach the $100 per barrel mark will only be determined by considering that an oil shock too severe for the world could backfire on its long-term plans. These interventions, however, are not expected to hold when the impact of higher crude prices is felt. Shifting energy landscapeThe current oil shock that the world is confronting brings back memories of the 1970s when OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, imposed an oil embargo on countries that supported Israel in the Yom Kippur War. For many, a deliberate reduction of coal use is compounded by lower energy availability from wind and solar farms.
