US says it’s weighing Google breakup as remedy in monopoly case
The US Justice Department told a federal judge it is considering recommending that Google be forced to sell off parts of its operations to alleviate the harm caused by its monopolisation of the online search market, in what would be a historic antitrust breakup. In a court filing Tuesday, antitrust enforcers said Judge Amit Mehta could also force the Alphabet Inc. unit to provide access to the underlying data it uses to build its search results and artificial intelligence products. The Justice Department “is considering behavioural and structural remedies that would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features — including emerging search access points and features, such as artificial intelligence — over rivals or new entrants,” the agency said in the filing. The Hindu journalist Mahesh Langa arrested in GST fraud case
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested The Hindu journalist Mahesh Langa along with three others in alleged GST related fraud case. This development comes after 14 firms and their proprietors were raided across Gujarat following a complaint by the Central GST department. The crime branch said that the GST fraud led to significant loss for the government exchequer, with the accused involved in availing and passing bogus input tax credit through fake bills. The Central GST has said that forged documents in the names of Mahesh Langa’s wife and father were used for dubious transactions. The Crime Branch in a statement said that as per the initial investigation, the fraud may run into crores.

Cognizant engaged in discrimination against non-Indian workers: US jury
BENGALURU: A US court has found IT services company Cognizant Technology Solutions guilty of discriminatory conduct towards non-Indian workers and that the company should pay punitive damages to compensate employees who suffered harm. The case is Palmer v. Cognizant Tech Solutions and it claims the IT giant misused the H-1B visa programme. It stated, “Cognizant doesn’t tolerate discrimination and takes such claims seriously. Christy Palmer v. Cognizant was initially filed in 2017 and addresses plaintiffs’ claims dating back to 2013.”The jury said the company engaged in a ‘pattern or practice’ of discrimination against a class of non-South Asian and non-Indian employees who were terminated. Plaintiffs claimed they were dismissed after a five-week period without work and that their positions were filled by Indian workers.
