MOSCOW: Russia's prison service said on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) it had sacked five officers, including the head of an infirmary and a regional chief, after harrowing videos emerged of alleged rape in a jail hospital. Videos of alleged rape and torture at a prison infirmary treating inmates with tuberculosis in the central city of Saratov were published this week by Gulagu.net, a rights group aiming to expose abuses in Russia's vast prison system. One video shows a man shoving a broom handle up the rectum of a screaming inmate tied to his bed.

MIDSAYAP, North Cotabato: The Cotabato District Jail in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, has pleaded to the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) to inoculate detained persons deprived of liberty here. In the entire Soccsksargen Region, only inmates at the Cotabato District Jail have not been vaccinated. Soccsksargen groups South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. One inmate in the district jail has already tested positive in a rapid antigen test and was subsequently quarantined in order to avoid further infections in the jail. Personnel of the district jail are on a 21-day duty scheme wherein they are not allowed to go outside within the period.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar on Thursday ordered all unit commanders to come up with a security plan to address violence resulting from intense political rivalries in next year's national poll. "Now that it is clear who will fight for the local elective positions, we expect heated political rivalries that could lead to violence [and] that is why I ordered the [police] unit commanders to begin their preparations to make sure no violence would ensue in their respective areas of responsibility," Eleazar said in a statement. "I also ordered our Intelligence Group to start the monitoring and background check on all the candidates who have the history, the potential and the means to sow violence as part of our aggressive efforts to ensure an honest and peaceful elections next year," he added. Eleazar said he was satisfied with the security measures enforced by the PNP since the beginning of the filing of the certificates of candidacy on October 1. "We assure our fellow Filipinos that their Philippine National Police will do everything in its power to ensure that this entire democratic process will be protected," he said.

Ramos lifted 67 kilograms in snatch and 147 kgs in total after hoisting 80 kgs in the clean and jerk. Hipolito lifted 60 kgs in the clean and jerk for a total of 114 kgs, good for fifth place in the division.

FDA grants EUA for COVID-19 drug RonapreveMANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency use authorization or EUA for Ronapreve as a treatment against COVID 19. FDA chief Eric Domingo said the agency approved the use of Ronapreve for mild and moderate COVID-19 cases. Ronapreve can be given only for COVID patients aged 12 and above, according to Domingo. Ronapreve is the first monoclonal antibody treatment for the prevention of COVID 19. Japan was the first country to approve Ronapreve as a treatment against COVID-19.

Beijing has mastered the game of brinkmanship, and is apparently playing it again. It has constantly threatened to use military force in its stand-off with Taiwan, but stops short of starting a shooting war. Trade between the Philippines and Taiwan totaled $8.25 billion in 2019, making us Taiwan's 14th largest trading partner. Biden was referring to the Nixonian one-China doctrine, in which Washington diplomatically recognizes Beijing as long as China leaves Taiwan alone.
