Pre-matchVincenzo Italiano brought back what looks most like his preferred XI, with Christian Kouamé on the wing and M’Bala Nzola up front. The Austrians pinned Fiorentina deep, pressing furiously and winning possession high up, then countering at speed. They were inches from doubling their lead in just the 7th minute, but Mayulu slammed his finish off the bar. At the other end, Kouamé and Nico continued serving as the engines of the attack, and it was fittingly those two who created the goal. More immediately, Fiorentina head north for a date with Inter Milan on Sunday.

When Ayub Khan the first usurper seemed invincible, it was Madar-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah who decided to challenge the might of the dictator by contesting the presidential elections in 1965. It was a lawyer who told me that he had himself fixed it to show support for the candidature of Ms Jinnah. Had she won the election, Jinnah’s Pakistan could have been saved. She corrected the derailment of the country, held elections and transferred power through free and fair elections and gracefully went home. Ms Fatima Jinnah tried to end the derailment of the country founded by her elder brother Muhammad Ali Jinnah but her efforts were thwarted by the usurper.

The capacity of a country to repay its domestic debt lies in its ability to raise revenues from different sources. Pakistan is wrangling with rising domestic debt, which underscores the need to expand the tax base in order to repay the domestic debt. Haque said that out of a population of 241.49 million, the presence of merely 3.37 million taxpayers highlighted the worrying status of the country’s tax base. Haque emphasised the documentation of the undocumented sectors in order to expand the tax base. Broadening the tax base is of paramount importance for Pakistan as it serves the dual purpose of servicing domestic debts and achieving equilibrium between revenue and expenditure.

As we celebrate our 76th Independence Day anniversary, it is fitting to reflect on the progress we have achieved as a nation and the path that still lies ahead. The challenge however is what criteria one can employ to gauge a country’s progress. Many years ago, while teaching community medicine to medical students, I came across a poignant definition that was included in the introduction of the 1997 Unicef report entitled ‘Progress of Nations’. We have increased our life expectancy, brought down the incidence of certain communicable diseases and widened our health coverage. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had forewarned that no nation can progress without the equal participation of its women.

Later in the day, the surety bonds for Imran’s release were not filed within the court timings, therefore, his release order could not be issued. In order to ensure his release, Imran’s legal team moved the IHC, requesting the court to restrain the FIA, NAB and the police from arresting him in any other case.
