Court dismisses suit challenging COVID-19 conviction
Akindele and her husband were convicted on April 6, 2020, by the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ogba, days after they held a crowded house birthday party contrary to Lagos State’s social distancing order. But a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, approached the court, challenging the legality of the Lagos State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020 pursuant to which, Akindele, her husband and 236 other residents were convicted and sentenced. Joint respondents in the suit, marked FHC/L/CS/588/2020, are the Lagos State government, Attorney-General of Lagos State, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and the Inspector-General of Police. But the Lagos State Government and the AG opposed him through their counsel, a Deputy Director, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mr. Adebayo Haroun. “The instant suit is incompetent and the court lacks jurisdiction to adjudicate over same.

Security agents foil kidnap attempt, kill bandit along Abuja-Kaduna road
A combined team of the Nigeria Police Force’s ‘Operation Puff Adder’ and that of the Nigerian Army’s ‘Operation Thunder Strike’ has foiled a kidnap attempt by suspected bandits along the Abuja-Kaduna highway on Sunday. The security team also killed one of the bandits terrorising travellers along the highway. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Mohammed Jalige, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, said the bandits were intercepted at the area where an exchange of fire ensued. The encounter, he said, forced the bandits to retreat into the forest with gun wounds while one bandit was neutralised by the gallant troops. Jalige also said upon the search of the general area, an AK47 rifle and nine bandits’ operational motorcycles were recovered.

Growing numbers of young Africans want to move abroad, survey suggests
African youth have lost confidence in their own countries and the continent as a whole to meet their aspirations and a rising number are considering moving abroad, according to a survey of young people from 15 countries. The pandemic, climate crisis, political instability and violence have all contributed to making young people “jittery” about their futures since the Covid pandemic began, according to the African Youth Survey published on Monday. Only 32% of the 4,500 young people interviewed, aged 18-24, were optimistic about Africa’s prospects, according to the survey – a drop of 11% since the last survey of its kind published in early 2020. Ichikowitz said Ghana had a younger government that was providing better support and easier access to financing that supported young businesses. He hopes the survey’s data will be used by governments to support the aspirations of their young people.

Tinubu campaign organisation disowns viral ‘manifesto’ on social media
The campaign organisation of the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, distanced itself from a viral document circulated on social media as Tinubu’s manifesto. Imo radio host arrested, not kidnapped
The Imo State Police Command has dispelled the speculation that Professor Jachimike Adiele was abducted on Saturday at a radio station in Owerri, the state capital.
