Muslims took to the streets in huge protests around Asia after Friday prayers, sparked by remarks about the Prophet Mohammed by an Indian ruling party official that embroiled the country in a diplomatic storm. “We gather here today to protest the insult of our prophet by Indian government officials,” said Amanullah Aman, a protester in the capital Dhaka. Be it India… or anyone else, they should know that defenders of Islam will not remain silent,” said school teacher Irfan Rizvi. A spontaneous shutdown saw businesses close across Srinagar, the region’s major city, with protesters calling for retribution against “disrespect” to the prophet. The row follows anger across the Muslim world in 2020 after French President Emmanuel Macron defended the right of a satirical magazine to publish caricatures of the prophet.

Various caucuses in the party are reportedly behind the push for eight names as likely preferred choice as running mate. The eight names that have so far emerged included a leading critic of the APC federal administration. “The only drawback for Kashim Shettima is that he’s not Hausa/Fulani and that it will be the first time Hausa/ Fulani will not be represented in government. “Lalong is neither Hausa nor Fulani stock, so the majority Hausa Fulani may not accept him. Those pushing for el-Rufai to become running mate claimed that it was the key demand of delegates when Tinubu visited Kaduna to lobby them.

The presidential primary of All Progressives Congress (APC) that was concluded on Wednesday afternoon has elicited a mixed grill. While for the aspirants of the Southeast, who lost to him, and indeed, the entire Southeast region, the two-day exercise was a reminder that the alleged marginalisation and injustices against the zone still persisted. This is because, as a party, the APC regarded itself as the symbol of justice and fairness, saying it distanced itself from politics of its rival, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The President’s two-day working visit to Ebonyi State last month provided opportunity for Igbo leaders to meet him, and even present their request for an Igbo president in 2023. Even when they met in Okorocha’s house, they did not come out with a consensus candidate to show that they were serious for an Igbo president.
