Dr Omar Touray, on Wednesday assumed office as the new President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission alongside. Touray assumed the new office along with other equally new statutory appointees of the commission. Touray in his inaugural remark pledged to build on the legacies and successes of the outgoing President, Jean-Claude Brou and his team to ensure a more sustainable and secure West African sub-region. He spoke of the need for institutional reforms, payment of community levies by ECOWAS member states, and the collaboration of citizens to address the challenges confronting the region. He also called for the collaboration and partnership between ECOWAS institutions and governments to lift community citizens out of abject poverty.

Members of Civil Society Organisation (CSO), community leaders and other stakeholders in the Niger Delta region on Tuesday harped on the mutual relationship among companies operating in the area and their host communities, as a panacea to sustainable development and a lasting solution to security in the environment. This was canvassed at the maiden edition of a one-day community stakeholders meeting held at Udo, Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State with the theme: “Sustainable Development and Security”. On his part, the Public Relations Officer, Okomu Oil Company, Fidelis Olise, said his company had taken all preventive measures to secure its farms, hence the seeming infringement and complaints from the host communities. He also agreed that Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc must also put its host communities into consideration while carrying out its activities to avoid conflict of interest. Mrs Helen Dise, from Agbede community, on her part, said that Okomu Oil Company had evacuated her community for its farm, adding that the river they used for fishing had been polluted.

THE Federal government has disclosed that it is working towards developing a framework to tidy up the agrochemical and pesticide business in Nigeria. The permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Ernest Umakhihe stated this in Abuja at the stakeholders’ workshop on agrochemicals handling, marketing, and distribution in the country. Umakhihe, who was represented by the deputy director of input use and agro farm input support services department, Ishaku Buba, said the ministry is working with the relevant house committee on agriculture to develop the framework. He stated that the increase in land under cultivation in the country has been attributed significantly to the use of an agrochemical. Bello explained that agricultural production in Nigeria faces significant losses due to activities of pests, insect infections, and other diseases.

The Ekiti State Police Command said on Monday that operatives of its Rapid Response Squad had arrested three suspected kidnappers terrorising part of the state. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Moronkeji Adesina, said the RRS operatives in collaboration with men of the vigilante group, nabbed the suspected kidnappers inside a deep forest in Ijan Ekiti in Gbonyin Local Government Area of the state. A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, titled, ‘Ekiti Police Command arrests three for kidnapping,’ listed the suspects as 38 years old Musa, 25 years old Ali, and 19 years old Suleiman. Abutu stated, “As part of the deliberate efforts of the Command to rid the state of kidnappers and other criminal elements, the operatives of the RRS, in collaboration with vigilantes, trailed and arrested three suspected kidnappers inside a deep forest in Ijan-Ekiti. “The arrested suspects, during interrogation, confessed to have been engaged in series of kidnapping operations in the state including two kidnapping incidents in Ikere Ekiti.
