Gunmen kill pregnant woman, injure oneSocio-economic activities were grounded for the second time in Enugu State, yesterday, following a sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). However, yesterday’s sit-at-home order was declared by the separatist group in solidarity with its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who appeared in court for the continuation of his trial. MEANWHILE, tragedy struck in Akwuke, Enugu South Council, Monday, as gunmen stormed the area and killed a pregnant woman and a member of the vigilante. Sources said the gunmen stormed a relaxation spot at about 08:30pm and started shooting. SIMILARLY, economic activities in Owerri, Imo State, were grounded, yesterday, in obedience to the sit-at-home order.

IN recent times, recommendations and advisories of the World Bank and IMF have been received coldly and, sometimes, with outright rejection. But the World Bank officials are quick to push back, saying the government of Nigeria implemented its recommendations halfway, which is worse than no implementation at all. “Those reactions are not channeled through the official means of communicating with the World Bank. The World Bank and IMF are mild in their report; what would the government do if a truly independent neutral body comes up with a report of the state of the economy?” he asks.

Is he contesting election as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church or President of Christian Association of Nigeria? To announce a Muslim/Muslim or Christian/Christian pairing at all is a sign of the danger ahead of us for 2023. This was part of the reason for the clamouring for restructuring ahead of the 2023 elections, if we are to save the nation Nigeria.

Newcastle agree to sign Lille defender Botman
Newcastle have agreed to a deal in principle to sign Dutch defender Sven Botman from French side Lille. Botman, 22, completed his medical in Newcastle on Tuesday and is set to arrive on a five-year contract in a reported £35 million ($42 million) transfer. The Premier League club said they had held off competition “from a host of European sides to secure the highly-rated centre-back”, with “the formalities of the transfer set to be concluded this week”. Botman’s arrival continues Newcastle’s rebuilding for the new campaign, with England goalkeeper Nick Pope having been signed from Burnley last week. Newcastle also signed Aston Villa full-back Matt Targett on a permanent move following a successful loan spell during the second half of last season.

G7: China must press Russia to stop Ukraine war
G7 leaders urged China on Tuesday to uphold the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes by pressing Russia to stop its invasion of Ukraine and dropping its “expansive maritime claims” in the South China Sea. “We stress that there is no legal basis for China’s expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea,” it said. The G7 leaders said they were “gravely concerned” about the human rights situation in China, including forced labour in Tibet and Xinjiang. China should also honour its commitments to uphold rights, freedom, and a high degree of autonomy in Hong Kong, they said. In unprecedented language, the G7 leaders also highlighted Chinese non-market policies which, they said, distorted the global economy, and they committed to working together to ensure a level playing field for their businesses and workers.

V&A to display its first African fashion exhibition
The Victoria and Albert Museum will open its first African fashion exhibition this week, more than 170 years after it was founded. Christine Checinska, the curator of African and African diaspora fashion at the V&A, said the exhibition was overdue. “So whether it’s Morocco to South Africa or Ghana in the west, [we want] to try to strategically break down those old colonial boundaries.”Located in the fashion galleries, Africa Fashion is divided into two parts. Other cases explore the work of fashion designers – some of whom are household names across Africa, but are little known outside the continent. Africa Fashion purposely does not address this hot-button issue.

The ASUU strike arises primarily from the failure of successive governments to honour agreements. As the government mismanages the dispute, the entire public tertiary education system is on the verge of collapse, with other major academic unions across the public tertiary education system also staging strikes and making threatening demands. Ngige is abrasive, while Adamu, like Buhari, is aloof and detached from the ugly reality and damaging impact of a collapsing national tertiary education sector. The World Bank says, “Tertiary education is instrumental in fostering growth, reducing poverty, and boosting shared prosperity. The task of salvaging the public tertiary education sector is not for ASUU, ASUP or COEASU alone, the central labour unions should weigh in dispassionately.

Fuel subsidy, refinery rehabilitation gulped N1.3tn in five months – NNPC
NNPC disclosed this in its latest presentation to the Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting for the month of June 2022. Bulk of the oil firm’s spending was on petrol subsidy, as it consumed N1.274tn during the five-month period, while for refinery rehabilitation, NNPC spent N9.11bn in each of the months of January, March and April, amounting to N27.33bn. An analysis of NNPC’s monthly fuel subsidy spendings indicated a continuous rise in the amount incurred as subsidy by the Federal Government through NNPC. Nigeria’s four refineries are not working, though the Port Harcourt refinery is currently under rehabilitation. The huge spending on subsidy had made experts and operators intensify the call for the fast rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries.

BREAKING: Buhari swears in Ariwoola as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria
), on Monday, swore in Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja. Ariwoola, who is the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court was sworn-in at around 3:00pm, hours after the resignation of the former CJN, Tanko Muhammad. Born on August 22, 1958, Justice Ariwoola, who hails from Iseyin, Oyo State, was formerly a Justice of the Court of Appeal before being elevated to the Supreme Court bench in 2011. In March 2017, then acting President Yemi Osinbajo nominated Justice Walter Onnoghen as the CJN to replace Justice Mahmud Mohammed. Justice Ariwoola will serve in an acting capacity until confirmed by the Senate under President Buhari’s request.

QNET unveils financial literacy programme for Nigerian youths
To reduce poverty through capacity building in Nigeria, QNET, a Global e-commerce and direct selling leader, has unveiled a financial literacy programme aimed at equipping youths with the knowledge needed for socio-economic empowerment. The programme tagged: ‘FinGreen’, is designed to impart critical financial management skills and knowledge by training young leaders drawn from various communities to become trainers and champions of financial literacy and economic empowerment among the youth. He stressed the need for financial literacy in equipping individuals with knowledge of financial risk to make more informed choices and improve financial well-being. According to him, with the launch done in partnership with Financial Literacy for All (FLFA), QNET has kicked off the pilot phase of the firms’ initiative. Fall said FinGreen recognises the recommendations outlined in the National Financial Literacy Framework by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which highlights the critical need for financial literacy as an important skill for financial inclusion.
