From a mere N443 billion budgeted for fuel subsidy in the Federal Government’s 2022 Appropriation Act, the subsidy incubus now guzzles trillions of Naira. It is already being projected that fuel subsidy would gulp nothing less than N6 trillion by the close of 2022. In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Mike Cohen, President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly defended the fuel subsidy policy, saying: “My government set in motion plans to remove the subsidy late last year (2021). Indeed, burdened by the huge fuel subsidy bill, the NNPC is no longer able to meet its remittance obligations to the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC). Consequent upon these unique challenges, rather than reap the bounties or ‘windfall’ arising from the very high oil prices engendered by the war, Nigeria is practically getting impoverished.

The Ukrainian army retreated from the strategic city of Lysychansk over the weekend, as Russia claimed a major victory by seizing control of the entire eastern Lugansk region. In an address late Sunday, Zelensky vowed Kyiv would fight on and ensure the military had “the most modern weapons”. Russia has previously accused Kyiv of conducting strikes on Russian soil, particularly in the Belgorod region. On Saturday, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko accused Kyiv of provocation and said his army intercepted missiles fired at his country by Ukrainian forces “around three days ago”. About 20 others were wounded as “the Russian army once again brutally shelled” the city, as well as Kramatorsk and Kharkiv.

I always wondered why sometimes, bad products with good advertisement and relentless communication with the market easily outsell the very good ones. It remained a mystery to me until I understood the power of positioning. Communication is of no value if it does not result into a connection that produces a cash-backed decision to buy. In today’s marketplace, where competition is very stiff and monopoly of any idea or business can hardly be sustained beyond a few months at the most, visibility is king! Visibility is the engine of fads!

Again, we are mutually kicking the CAN (can of religious worms) of division down the road to our collective and mutual destruction in Nigeria. Without any contradictions, what development has religion in Nigeria brought to Nigerians other than misery, division, underdevelopment, mutual hatred, physical and mental insecurity, etc.! On the same hand of achievement, Dogara is well-versed in education, a good and quintessential Christian from Northeast Nigeria. The achievements of Tinubu, a Southern Muslim politician, and these leaders (Zulum and Dagora) from northern Nigeria have no religious connotation. In Nigeria, religion and tribe are toxic to politics, human relationships and the sociology of human beings.

AfDB gets US backing on plans to feed AfricaThe United States has announced support for the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) initiative to significantly increase food production in Africa to avert the looming food crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war. The programme was launched by the AfDB in 2018 to boost countries’ resilience to climate shocks and it operates in almost a dozen African countries. This will allow Africa to rapidly-produce over the next four farming seasons an additional 38 million tons of food worth $12 billion. This will include 11 million tons of wheat, 18 million tons of maize, six million tons of rice and 2.5 million tons of soybeans. Features The Mystery Behind the Extraction of Wants By Shola Joshua Generally, with humans, there is always a chase for something bigger, larger, weightier, taller, smarter, prettier, and so on. The comparative human satisfaction interwoven with the readiness to achieve one’s desires are facts presented as running an endless race. Where human satisfaction truly lies is in the perfectly wrung ladder that stems from the management of tangible, measurable skills and desires. Likewise, the activities of the devil’s workshop will become a flux without a cure as long as there’s no exclusive reserve on comparative wants. It’s, however, hard to take on ending the mysterious search to satisfy human wants as it’s an endless exploration of the suffix “-er”.

Most people accepted that the way to run African polities—and by polities, I mean states—was through democratic rule. Unfortunately, the forces that were arrayed against democratic rule did not give up. The United States must continue to show its willingness to support democratic rule, democratic associations, and free and fair elections. Yet, a terrible signal is being sent to African countries when a country invades another for absolutely no reason. Perhaps this is responsible for the decision of some African countries to abstain from the votes to condemn Russia’s action at the United Nations.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), on Saturday, said accepting to be the running mate to any presidential candidate would lead to the collapse of NNPP. Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano State, who was in Gombe State to inaugurate the state office of NNPP and meet with elected members of the party stated this in an interview with newsmen. Kwankwaso confirmed that his party had been in talks with the Labour Party for a possible merger but the main issue that hindered progress was the issue of who becomes the presidential candidate. “From the discussion with Labour Party, the main issue was who becomes the president if the parties merge. An introduction as simple as mail-in, would substantially eradicate the embarrassing merchandising that has now come to define voting days in Nigeria. Areas where other candidates have most of the supporters are likely to be battlegrounds from dawn to dusk on election day. Their ripe kola is now a major expenditure in election budget for candidates, desirous of winning the Nigerian way. As currently situated, the electoral process is too compromised for the support to translate into concrete victory. This new national anthem of “Obidient” is strange to them and they will do all they can, to stop the music.

The saga of two Irish businessmen, Michael Quinn and Brendan Cahill, who promised to revolutionise Nigeria’s energy sector, will be at the centre of a high court trial early next year. The huge award for the gas company, Process & Industrial Developments (P&ID), is more than 10 times Nigeria’s national health budget. The case has become a cause célèbre in Nigeria where officials now allege the gas deal was corruptly procured and the subsequent arbitration proceedings were “tainted” by claims of collusion. The Nigerian government says after arbitration, P&ID was purchased by Lismore Capital and VR Advisory Ltd, an investment fund. Lismore Capital, a litigation funding firm, is owned by a leading commercial lawyer, Seamus Andrew, who represented P&ID in the arbitration proceedings.

Some senior lawyers also commented on the issue, clarifying the perceived mystery around the leather bag. Some people say it is used in keeping either the Holy Bible or Holy Quran.

The search for survivors buried under a landslide in India’s northeast entered its third day Saturday with 25 bodies pulled from the rubble and nearly 40 people still missing. Most of the victims were reserve soldiers from the Territorial Army who had been working on the railway project. The situation at the scene of the landslide was “still serious” with rainfall and bad weather hampering rescue efforts, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said. India’s remote northeast has been pummelled by heavy rainfall in recent weeks, triggering landslides and floods. Dozens were killed in the region after flooding last month, with relentless rains causing landslides and inundating homes.
