THE G5 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have abandoned their attempt to line up behind a single presidential candidate in the February presidential election. Ortom is stoutly in favour of the candidate of Obi, announcing on Tuesday that he supports his endorsement by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. It was learnt that the G5 members went into Wednesday’s meeting to encourage each other to take a position that is consistent with his state’s political reality in order not to jeopardise their personal ambitions. The source added that the Ibadan meeting should produce a common stand where the governors will now be allowed to stick to their preferences. Benue can say whatever he wants to say.

However, the school Principal, Mrs Tofunmi Akamo, who spoke to Punchng.com yesterday on the development denied any cover up. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has already issued Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence to Starlink, and the firm is currently undergoing some administrative processes. This means at the end of the fourth quarter this year, Starlink will compete with other Internet service providers like MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom, 9mobile, and Spectranet. “With this collaboration with SpaceX’s Starlink, Nigeria is set to be the 1st African country to introduce the service.” He told participants at the event.

Operatives of the Delta State Police have arrested three suspects who specialized in raping their victims and making sex videos of them before demanding ransom in the state. The suspects were identified as Cornelius Emene, Nelson Aghogho and Ufuoma Tunde. He said the suspects were arrested after one of their victims reported spotting one of them on Monday, January 2, 2023. “The suspects phones contained numerous sex video recording of their previous victims, which was also used to blackmail them and their parents. The three suspects, Cornelius Ememah, Nelson Aghogho (aka Little), and Ofuoma Tunde ‘f’, are currently in custody, and investigation is ongoing,” the statement read.

New govt policy to facilitate cultivation of 2.7 million hectares of riceAccording to the recently launched National Rice Development Strategy II (NRDS II) Nigeria is aiming at increasing the rice area under irrigation from less than 1 million hectares to 2.7 million hectares, particularly areas under supplementary water supply to attain 2 cropping per year. The document noted that cultivable land in the country is estimated at 4.234 million hectares, made up of rain-fed uplands at 30 percent, rain-fed lowland at 52 percent, irrigated lowlands at 17 percent and mangrove at 1 percent. The new Strategy also targets to build the capacity of 84,000 extension agents and 12 million farmers on Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) and Sustainable Rice Production (SRP). The document further noted that the objectives of the new Strategy is to bring more of Nigeria’s potential rice areas into cultivation through land development and make more rice land available. The new Rice Strategy also aims at increasing average yield to 4.0 tons per hectare for rain-fed upland, 6.0 tons per hectare for rain-fed lowland and 7.5 tons per hectare for irrigated ecology through the introduction of new high-yielding climate-smart rice varieties.

A Unique Health Medical Center, Warri, in Delta state has allegedly seized a newborn for non-payment of a N383,500 hospital bill for over one month. PUNCH Metro gathered that the mother of the twins, Mrs Akpesiri Ojiko delivered the two babies on November 17, 2022, at the general hospital Warri. It was learnt that one of the babies was taken to a private Hospital on referral by the general hospital as a result of a lack of bed space.
