Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu had on Wednesday during his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun alleged that the new naira notes policy was an act of sabotage against his ambition. The last time that Nigeria redesigned notes was more than nine years ago and this is something that we normally do in a period of between five and seven years; so, nobody is being targeted. We have mandated all banks and we have given all banks enough redesigned notes to put into their ATMs. “Tuesday next week is the last day for the old notes. “This policy is for the masses, we want the masses to get the redesigned notes as and when they require.

The United Nations has advised Nigerians to abstain from hate speech, adding that the consequences are severe as electioneering campaigns for the general elections intensify. He stressed, “In Nigeria, with national elections imminent, we must be watchful for any upsurge in hate speech and disinformation, particularly if tensions were to rise between political, regional, or ethnic groups. From historical experience, we know that atrocities have been preceded by hate speech. “Hate speech is a threat to our cherished values, to the cohesion of our societies, and the lives of our most vulnerable, especially women and girls. The alarm bells were ringing from the very beginning; hate speech and disinformation; contempt for human rights and the rule of law; the glorification of violence and tales of racial supremacy; disdain for democracy and diversity.”

Across the country, most filling stations have been shut, and long queues at stations where fuel is available at all are impeding traffic flow even as desperate fuel seekers get into fisticuffs. Largely because December fuel crisis has not often extended to the last days of January, the situation across the country right now is one of agony, if not chaos. It is quite disappointing and regrettable that the fuel crisis that the country has been experiencing months before the end of 2022 is still biting today, well into the new year. Nigerians are in pains, having to bear the agonies of a fuel crisis alongside pervasive insecurity and a fast deteriorating economy. There is no visible sign that it has been doing this at any level and it would be important for it to resume its governing responsibilities by ending the persisiting fuel crisis.

New measures to improve conditions for seafarers, including those who have been abandoned, have been adopted at a meeting involving governments, maritime workers and employers’ organisations. The guidelines aim to improve coordination among countries, including flag states, port states, states in which seafarers are national or resident, and states in which recruitment and placement services operate, to resolve abandonment cases more quickly, including getting seafarers paid and repatriated home to their families. Under the MLC, 2006, flag States – countries where ships are registered and/or whose flag the ships are flying – must ensure a financial security system is in place for ships under those flags. The new guidelines encourage flag states to verify, at least yearly, the validity of financial security. The stakeholders include the relevant national seafarers’ welfare boards, shipping agencies, seafarers’ and shipowners’ organisations, seafarer welfare organisations, seafarer recruitment and placement services and others.

Moldovan teenager Vladislav Gradinari went from a country with just “three or four” snooker tables to becoming the youngest player to win a televised match. The 14-year-old beat three-time women’s world champion Ng On-yee in the first round of the one-frame BetVictor Snooker Shootout in Leicester. The momentous victory sees Gradinari, who lives in Leeds, advance into the next round at the Morningside Arena as he explained snooker is not the most accessible sport in his homeland. “It is not really popular, we have three or four tables in the whole country,” the reigning England under-14 champion told World Snooker Tour. Iran’s Hossein Vafaei beat Williams last year but will not retain his title after losing to former world champion Shaun Murphy.

The Senate also urged the CBN to compel commercial banks to open naira exchange windows for those without bank accounts to exchange their old naira notes.
