More Nigerians in South Africa on Tuesday continued to express outrage over the reported invasion of the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg and the disconnection of electricity supply to the premises. “We condemn the unwarranted action by City Power and their police cohort on the property of the consulate of Nigeria. “There cannot be any plausible excuse to warrant the invasion of the Nigerian Consulate. According to the body, the consulate is committed to quality representation of Nigeria in South Africa and would not do anything to jeopardise any indigenous or foreign organisation and business in South Africa and will so request that in return. It urged the South African authorities to respect the Nigerian Consulate and notify it on matters the public, organisations and individuals would want the Nigerian Consulate to act upon.

Narcotic forfeiture: PDP seeks court order to declare Tinubu ineligible for election
By Leon Usigbe and Taofeek Lawal, AbujaThe Atiku/Okowa Campaign Organisation has approached the court to seek an order to declare Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ineligible to contest next month’s presidential because of his conviction and forfeiture of money relating to narcotics in the United States. “For the avoidance of doubt the United States Court in sentencing Asiwaju Tinubu ordered ‘that the funds in the amount of $460,000 in account 263226700 held by First Heritage Bank in the name of Bola Tinubu represent proceeds of narcotics trafficking or were involved in financial transactions in violation of 18 U.S.C. S1956 and 1957 and therefore these funds are forfeited to the United States pursuant to 21 U.S.C. “As you are all aware, Nigeria is a signatory to such international conventions and therefore is mandatorily obligated to implement the consequential effect of the conviction imposed on Asiwaju Tinubu by a Court of Competent jurisdiction in the criminal case of trafficking in narcotic. “Compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately delist Asiwaju Tinubu as Presidential candidate of the APC or any other political Party for that matter and expunge his name from all materials and documents related to the 2023 Presidential election.

Lekki deep seaport receives first commercial vessel
Few hours to the official inauguration of the Lekki deep seaport, the port on Sunday received the first commercial container vessel. “Ahead of President’s commissioning of @LekkiPort for commercial operations tomorrow (Monday), one of the largest container vessels, the CMA-CGM, has berthed at the port. Once more, @NigerianPorts has proven that it is prepared to offer marine services for seamless port operations,” the tweet read. The President, Major General Muhammad Buhari, (retd) will on Monday inaugurate the $1.5bn Lekki deep seaport for commercial operations. The Lekki deep seaport is one of the largest seaport in the country and one of the biggest in West Africa that will revolutionise the way goods are transported and traded in Nigeria.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has placed a $50,000 reward for anyone who can give vita information that would lead to the arrest of Simon Ekpa. In a statement made by the Secretary General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Monday, the 23rd of January, 2023, the Ndigbo alleged that Simon Ekpa is working for an unnamed presidential candidate as he is one of their strategies. Ohanaeze also claimed that Ekpa is shielding himself with his Finnish citizenship to wreck havoc in the South East and evade arrest. The statement read in part. The group further declared Simon Ekpa as the “number one adversary and enemy of Ndigbo who Ndigbo had caught sight of in the last 200 years”.

India plans to cut gold import duty to arrest smuggling
(REUTERS)A cut in the import duty by the world’s second-biggest consumer could lift retail sales by making gold cheaper ahead of peak demand season and support global prices . The effective duty is now 18.45%, which includes the 12.5% import duty, 2.5% agriculture infrastructure development cess and other taxes. An official at the Ministry of Commerce said it was in favour of cutting the import duty on gold and had asked the finance ministry to do so. “Smuggling is going up,” said the commerce ministry official, adding that the duty could be cut in an upcoming budget. Indian gold prices jumped to a record 56,850 rupees per 10 grams last week.

Two lawmakers, supporters injured as Ortom’s convoy involves in auto crash
Several persons including two members of the Benue State House of Assembly and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the convoy of the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, were on Friday involved in an accident in Utokon community while on a campaign tour to Ado local government area of the state. The long convoy of PDP supporters led by Governor Samuel Ortom was in Benue South senatorial district in continuation of the party governorship campaign rally when the accident occurred. Our correspondent reports that the incident occurred when the driver of a branded bus fully loaded with PDP supporters lost control and rammed into three vehicles; a Jeep, a security vehicle and another bus in the convoy. Several party supporters including state lawmakers representing Guma and Kwande West in the state assembly were injured in the accident that occurred around 10:50 am on Friday which also affected other vehicles. Meanwhile, an ambulance attached to the convoy evacuated the injured persons to the hospital while the rest continued with the journey.

Criminal Charge: Amaechi, Cole to be Served Via Nation & Guardian Newspapers
Justice Chiwendu Wogu of the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has granted an order that the former Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi, the APC governorship candidate, Tonye Cole, and the former commissioner for power, Augustine Wokocha be served through a substituted means in a fresh criminal lawsuit instituted against them by the Rivers State government. Justice Wogu gave the order after the lead lawyer to the Rivers State government, Den Wigwe told the court that they could not serve the defendants due to the inability of the Sheriff to locate their addresses. Wigwe, however, asked the court to grant the prosecution an order to serve the defendant through substituted means. The judge ruled that the defendants should be served on the Nation and Guardian newspapers. The defendants are accused of misappropriation of public funds and fraudulent sale of state assets between 2007 and 2015 when Amaechi was governor.

Kwara Geographic Information Service generates N900m in 2022
Kwara state Geographic Information Service (KW-GIS) said that it generated about N900 million in its 2022 operations through applications for land titles from prospective landowners in the state. The KW-GIS boss said that prospective builders in the state could obtain a building permit within 15 days of application. He added that the agency planned to establish additional offices in both Kwara South and Kwara North senatorial districts of the state to bring services closer to people and make it more efficient. Mallam Shittu also revealed that the service is also working to decentralize its service with the creation of zonal offices in the three senatorial districts of the state. He also said that the agency had trained 50 staff in Information Communication Technology (ICT) to ensure effective and timely automated operations.
