But David Cunningham, CEO of mortgage broker Squirrel, and a former CEO of The Co-operative Bank, is warning that "households are in for a WORLD OF PAIN". He says the average mortgage rate Kiwis are paying today is 4.40% - up from a low of 3.20% just over a year ago. "Households are in for a WORLD OF PAIN. Rather it’ll happen as a result of a bigger labour supply, which will be a drag on inflation," Cunningham says. "Governor Orr: Don’t kill the economy, and inflict even more pain on top of what’s already coming for Kiwi households, just to slay the dragon that little bit faster."

Because the phrase “coalition of chaos” clearly applies to its leadership team. As reported by RNZ’s Mediawatch Luxon’s announcement on Morning Report on May 10 appears to have been a misspeak by him. Then there were reports that a group of Auckland businessmen had approached Nicola Willis to roll Luxon as leader. There is an additional $10m commissioning funding incentive paid if NZ Steel can get the furnace up and running by January 2027. Luxon and Willis are the real coalition of chaos.

Acting Detective Sergeant Corey Reid said the warrants were part of Operation Cobalt, which was “targeting illegal activity by gang members and their associates”. A 46-year-old man has already appeared in the same court on charges of possessing methamphetamine, as has a 30-year-old man on other drug-related charges. “Wairarapa police is committed to early intervention into gang activity and focused on enforcement when there is illegal activity,” Reid said“Deploying armed police in our communities is not a decision we take lightly but gangs, drugs and firearms are a dangerous mix.”

The slump in house prices over the last 18 months has raised the spectre of some home owners falling into negative equity. A home owner's equity is the amount of money they would be left with after they had paid off their mortgage. If the value of a home increases, that will increase the value of the owner's equity. The first step in that equation is working out how many homes are likely to be worth less now than they were when their owners purchased them. So there's potentially 136,609 homes that are now worth less than their owners paid of them.

If you’re a member of the second group, you’ll know the frustration, fury and despair of a night without sleep. “Sleep makes us feel good, helps us learn, improves our concentration, helps us manage our weight, gives us greater self-control, reduces our risk of ill-health and is completely free of charge,” says sleep scientist Dr Sophie Bostock. A 2022 paper from Cambridge University agreed that a minimum of seven hours is recommended for good health. Dr Guy Meadows is clinical director of the Sleep School and author of The Sleep Book: How to Sleep Well Every Night. “Unfortunately, for many of us, good sleep involves managing your caffeine intake,” he says.

From Radio New Zealand:NZ Steel’s Glenbrook plant will install an electric arc furnace – halving its coal use – in what the government is calling the country’s largest ever emissions reduction project. Half of the coal being used at the site will be replaced with electricity to recycle scrap steel. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has announced plans for the project at a media briefing at the site in south Auckland this afternoon. It will also achieve over 5 percent of all New Zealand’s required emissions reductions between 2026-2030 and and 3.4 percent within the third emissions budget (2031-2035). Set a price for Carbon, collect money from the large emitters and then use the funds to reduce emissions.

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says military presence doesn't necessarily signify militarisation. Hipkins said he has had constructive conversations with PNG's Prime Minister James Marape and Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown. The message to all Pacific nations was New Zealand is a trusted partner, with the interests of all Pacific nations at heart, but recognises they are sovereign nations, Hipkins said. The Cook Islands economy is highly dependent on tourism, and Hipkins said the funding would help the country continue to deliver essential services. "The Cook Islands government is managing its country's recovery impressively, but an unprecedented 41 percent economic contraction from Covid-19 can't be underestimated."
