Shy and retiring by nature, with a preference for solitude and the dark, few would describe Paora, 4, as a natural diplomat. Yet this Miami-based kiwi — one of about 60 of the flightless birds living in zoos outside their native New Zealand — has been forced into the international spotlight, literally and figuratively. Footage of Paora being petted by zoo visitors under fluorescent lights has caused an outcry in New Zealand, where it is common knowledge that the national bird is nocturnal and should not be handled other than by experts. Zoo Miami apologized this week, saying that it would no longer allow members of the public to touch him. “I immediately went to the zoo director, and I said, ‘We have offended a nation,’” Ron Magill, a spokesman for the zoo, told Radio New Zealand on Wednesday.

They were popular points for the older crowd, who in particular were on the verge of applause at any mention of being tough on crime. Luxon tried to move the focus from these fiery issues over to the economy, which he said was the central issue of the election. 80-year-old Michael from Hillcrest said October couldn’t come fast enough, saying concerns around crime were his biggest worry at present. Luxon provided plenty of fodder for the crime-concerned, saying he was prepared to give police additional tools to come down hard on gangs. Bidois said in his door-stopping, 80 percent of the issues brought up had to do with crime or the cost of living.

New Zealand Herald Business Editor, Liam Dann, reveals what the latest decision around the OCR means for New ZealandersPublic Interest Journalism funded through NZ On AirA South Auckland couple working four jobs between them to pay their mortgage say they are contemplating moving to Australia after the latest Official Cash Rate (OCR) rise. Economists and mortgage brokers were taken aback by the forecasts, given prior expectations were for a peak OCR of 6 per cent, with lower-than-expected forecast rates signalling a potential reprieve for homeowners. Sunny Saharan and his wife Pooja are juggling their mortgage payments with holding down multiple jobs and raising 1-year-old Summer. And though there was light at the end of the tunnel, mortgage rates weren’t expected to decrease in a hurry. “It does not make any sense to me that we have to pay 33 per cent tax on the second income,” Sunny said.

National Party leader Christopher Luxon says using AI-generated photos to illustrate attack ads is no different to using generic stock images. It was revealed yesterday that the party had used generative AI tools to produce realistic-looking photos for its commercials — including attack ads. (Source: Instagram)"You either go out and buy a stock image of an actor playing a fake role, which is one option, or you can create an AI stock image. The use of AI technology for political ads has raised eyebrows overseas. Isn't it brilliant that our team is using technology, and able to do the outreach to New Zealanders," Luxon said.

Photo: NZ HeraldNational's leader Christopher Luxon has revealed he intends to change the rules on housing density if his party forms the next government. The rules Luxon wants to scrap allow three-storey dwellings on all residential land in the main cities. Luxon was the National leader at the time of the vote and his deputy, Nicola Willis, was one of the bill’s principal sponsors. Although Luxon says density along transport corridors would be retained, this is a backtrack on his own position and the position of his party. Luxon responded that his party wanted to “improve outcomes for Māori and non-Māori”.
