One lecture on gender inequality in India was pending in an elective course I teach, titled ‘Economics of Poverty and Inequality’. AdvertisementI remember an article published long back on how large language models, aka a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI), can be sexist. While posts recommended for male students included financial analyst, investment banker, data analyst, market research analyst and policy analyst, women students were seen as a better fit as financial planners, development consultants and environment economists. Check out | Bridging the gap: Women in AI and the challenges to inclusionThese results give us food for thought: start writing your own emails, resumes and assignments. While universities are deploying plagiarism tools to check the use of AI in writing and docking students’ grades, it is important to understand that the bias generated by AI goes unchecked despite this exercise.

Flagging the possibility of horse-trading and violation of Constitutional provisions, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said Saturday that a BJP Speaker in the new Lok Sabha would be “dangerous for parliamentary traditions”. The post, he said, should be held by the TDP, the NDA’s second biggest member with 16 MPs. BJP has a history of that,” Singh, a Rajya Sabha member the party’s in-charge for UP, told reporters in Lucknow. “If the Speaker will be from TDP and not from the BJP, the threat of breaking parties from NDA and (Opp) INDIA (bloc) both will be contained,” he claimed. Singh said the INDIA bloc will wait for the BJP’s decision on the Speaker’s selection, but suggested the alliance discuss their moves should the BJP retain the post.

Recent researches show that chatbots — when clearly identified and not overly humanised — help consumers feel less embarrassed during such purchases. They hypothesised that consumers with high self-presentation concerns would see an ambiguous chat agent to be human to brace for potential embarrassment. Comfort of KnowingThe research also examined consumer responses to clearly identified chatbots. Contrary to earlier findings suggesting negative reactions to known chatbots, Jin and her team found that consumers preferred clearly identified chatbots over human agents when self-presentation concerns were active. Businesses should consider avoiding overly humanising chatbots in scenarios where self-presentation concerns are likely to be high, such as online pharmacies or stores selling personal care products.

If there’s one object that has revolutionised the Indian middle-class living room, it’s the television — also known as the “idiot box”. Contrary to the belief that smartphones have taken over, television still holds a significant place in the family living room. However, owning a television set in the past came with its own set of challenges. And if all else failed, a good thump on the side of the TV set was the go-to solution to get it working again. Television, the humble “idiot box,” remains a beloved and integral part of Indian middle-class life.

Shoaib Malik criticized Babar Azam’s captaincy, saying that he has not seen growth or development in Babar’s leadership skills over the past four years. Malik’s comments came after Pakistan’s loss to the USA in the T20 World Cup 2024. The former skipper, who played under Babar’s captaincy in the 2021 T20 World Cup, believes that Babar’s approach to captaincy is rigid and inflexible. Pakistan, who were the runners-up of T20 World Cup 2022, were handed a crushing defeat by the US in their opening game at the ongoing edition. Azam Khan was sent back to the pavilion on a golden duck as Shadab Khan and Babar Azam helped Pakistan reach a respectable total.

It will be Exit, Mr Modi, the authoritarian prime minister of a single-party government and Enter, Mr Modi, the prime minister of a coalition of many parties with barely a 20-seat majority (of which TDP has 16 MPs and JDU 12 MPs). Mr Modi did not prepare for this role in his nearly 55 years of public life as a pracharak, general secretary of BJP, chief minister of Gujarat and prime minister of India. They value freedom, right to speech and expression, right to privacy, and right to protest. ‘Encounter’ and ‘bulldozer justice’ must be abandoned (a lesson especially to Mr Adityanath, chief minister of UP). To rub in the point, a view has been circulated by the opposition that Mr Modi hasn’t got the numbers fairly. Mr Modi spent a chunk of his acceptance speech after being elected as the head of the National Democratic Alliance spewing invectives at the Congress. This has prompted analysts to remark that the opposition looks stronger than the coalition headed by Mr Modi. On the other hand, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Delhi on Saturday for the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Before the swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Modi will visit Raj Ghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

Despite changing the Chief Minister just before the Lok Sabha elections to consolidate the non-Jat vote, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to have been outmanoeuvred by the Congress in Haryana. The strategic placement of politicians such as Deepender Hooda and Selja Kumari in a personality and family-driven political contest yielded political dividends for the Congress. Meanwhile, the Congress improved its vote share from 28% in 2019 to 44% in 2024. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)’s votes were split between the BJP and Congress, benefiting the latter the most. The Congress’s strategic manoeuvres and its creation of a broad social coalition in Haryana paid off.
