The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is set to double the country's electricity generation and become Africa's biggest dam. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been under construction since 2011 at a cost of $4 billion (€3.7 billion). "Congratulations to all on the fourth filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam," Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office wrote on social media on Sunday. The leaders of both countries had held rare talks in July to begin to finalize an agreement for filling the dam and the rules for its operation. Ethiopia claims the GERD will not reduce the volume of water flowing downstream.

Egypt has voiced its anger after Ethiopia declared the completion of the final filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile river. The announcement has rekindled a long-standing dispute between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan over the hydroelectric dam project, which dates back to its launch in 2011. However, Ethiopia asserts that the $4.2 billion GERD will not cut the downstream countries' share of Nile water. It plans on generating more than 6,000 MW at the GERD dam that is situated approximately 30 kilometres from Ethiopia's border with Sudan. In a statement on Facebook, it said that the "unilateral" filling of the reservoir was "illegal" and a violation of a 2015 declaration of principles signed by the three nations.

Ethiopia says it has finished filling a reservoir for its controversial hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile river - a project which once prompted Egyptian politicians to discuss military action. Construction of the $4bn (£3.2bn) Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam began in 2011 and Ethiopia sees the project as crucial to powering its economic development. The Blue Nile originates in Ethiopia and flows for around 900 miles through the country. It is one of two major tributaries of the famous River Nile. In 2013, Egyptian politicians were caught on camera discussing whether to destroy the dam which, they said, could threaten Egypt's existence.

Near her grave, she would sit and pray under the date palm and among the flowering plants, a few hours of peace in Cairo ’s historic City of the Dead. It has encouraged the growth of gated suburban compounds outside the city while building a giant new capital in the desert. But the cemetery destruction sparked an outcry that is unusual in an Egypt, where dissent has been squelched for years under el-Sissi. The City of the Dead, covering nearly 2 square miles (5 square kilometers), has been a unique space in Cairo for centuries. Omar’s extended family has five mausoleums in the cemetery, two of which are slated for destruction.

The giant dam project, not yet completed, is already generating electricity (pictured last year)Egypt has voiced anger after Ethiopia announced it had filled the reservoir at a highly controversial hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile river. Egypt relies on the Nile for nearly all its water needs. Ethiopia says the $4.2bn (£3.4bn) dam will not cut their share of Nile water. Ethiopia believes the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) will double the country's electricity output, providing a vital development boost, as currently half the 127-million population lacks electricity. Ethiopia announced on Sunday it had filled its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile, which has been the source of a long-running water dispute with downstream Egypt and Sudan. Egypt and Sudan fear the massive $4.2bn dam will severely reduce the share of Nile water they receive and have repeatedly asked Addis Ababa to stop filling it until they have all reached agreement on how it should work. Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on X, formerly Twitter: "It is with great pleasure that I announce the successful completion of the fourth and final filling of the Renaissance Dam. The Ethiopian government’s communications service said on X that the dam, arguably the largest in Africa, was "a gift to generations”. The dam has been at the centre of a regional dispute ever since Ethiopia broke ground on the project in 2011.
