Africa: Ethiopia Finishes Filling Reservoir of Contentious Mega-Dam

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is set to double the country's electricity generation and become Africa's biggest dam. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been under construction since 2011 at a cost of $4 billion (€3.7 billion). "Congratulations to all on the fourth filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam," Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office wrote on social media on Sunday. The leaders of both countries had held rare talks in July to begin to finalize an agreement for filling the dam and the rules for its operation. Ethiopia claims the GERD will not reduce the volume of water flowing downstream.
