On Sunday, Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed (pictured above) announced that the fourth and final filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) was complete in a move that was immediately denounced by Egypt as a violation of international law. The two countries have been engaged in a long-running dispute over the dam, which Ethiopia says is vital for its power needs but Egypt fears could limit its access to Nile waters. The Nile contributes 90% of Egypt’s fresh water and underpins its irrigation and power generation. Ethiopia began to generate electricity from the project two years ago and is already selling power to Djibouti, Sudan; and Kenya. “Affordable electricity is a game changer and driver of accelerated development which is much needed for Ethiopia,” said Chandria.

Cairo, Sept 12: Egypt has said that Ethiopia’s filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) reservoir on the Blue Nile river without a consensus with Egypt and Sudan, the two downstream countries, is a violation of the Declaration of Principles, a previously signed tripartite deal. On Sunday, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on social media X, formerly known as Twitter, the completion of the fourth and final filling of the GERD reservoir. “This is a violation by Ethiopia of the Declaration of Principles signed by the three sides in 2015,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “This move and its negative effects place a burden on the resumed negotiations, which have been set for four months to conclude,” the ministry said. Ethiopia started to build the GERD in 2011 and expects the giant hydropower project to generate more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity, but Egypt and Sudan have been worried that it might reduce their proportion of Nile water.

NAIROBI: Ethiopia announced on Sunday it has filled its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile, the source of a long-running water dispute with downstream Egypt and Sudan. Egypt and Sudan fear the massive $4.2-billion dam will severely reduce the share of Nile water they receive and have repeatedly asked Addis Ababa to stop filling it until they have all reached agreement on how it should work. “It is with great pleasure that I announce the successful completion of the fourth and final filling of the Renaissance Dam,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad said on X, formerly Twitter. Egypt’s foreign ministry condemned as “illegal” the news that Ethiopia had filled its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile. Egypt, which is already suffering from severe water scarcity, sees the dam as an existential threat because it relies on the Nile for 97 per cent of its water needs.

Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris mocked Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s announcement that his country had completed the fourth and final filling of the Renaissance Dam reservoir. Sawiris said in a post on the X (formerly Twitter): “I wonder if there is a fifth filling… or you’ve choked on water already.”Sawiris’ sarcastic post sparked reactions among his followers, who lamented the unpleasant reality that Egypt has reached regarding the Renaissance Dam issue. Activists said that Abiy Ahmed’s announcement that the fourth filling is the last may be followed by a retraction, and that a fifth may cause greater harm to Egypt. Abiy Ahmed said that the fourth filling was accompanied by internal challenges and external pressures, adding: “We have overcome all these matters, and became able to reach this stage.”He called on “all Ethiopians to continue their support until the dam is completed,” according to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA). The Egyptian foreign ministry said on Sunday that the announcement by Ethiopia that it has completed the fourth filling of the reservoir at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a “new violation by Addis Ababa” and a “burden” on the recently resumed negotiations between them. “It is,” said the ministry, “a violation of the Declaration of Principles signed between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan in 2015.”This declaration, the Egyptians pointed out, stipulates that the three countries must reach an agreement on the rules for filling the reservoir and operating the dam before commencing the filling process. “This approach, along with its negative consequences, imposes a challenge to the ongoing negotiation process, which has a four-month timeline for completion. Cairo and Khartoum are committed to reaching a binding agreement with Addis Ababa first on this matter, to ensure the continued flow of their share of water from the River Nile. Ethiopia rejects this approach, and insists that it does not intend to harm the two downstream countries.

The move represents an escalation in a long-standing water dispute between Ethiopia and its downstream neighbors, Egypt and Sudan. However, recent developments could “impose a challenge” to the upcoming round of talks in Addis Ababa, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry stated. Since Ethiopia initiated the project in 2011, the GERD has been a major source of regional contention. Egypt and Sudan are extremely concerned that the USD 4.2 billion project will substantially reduce their allotted Nile water share. Ethiopia maintains that GERD will not diminish the downstream water flow.

Why it matters: This will allow Ethiopians to use Fayda as their bank ID to carry out KYC checks and complete remote onboarding. Last month, Madras Security Printers Private Limited was contracted by the Ethiopian government to produce one million cards for the country’s digital ID project with a $300,000 bid. For context, Ethiopia has an estimated population of 120.3 million, and only about 3.4 million Ethiopians have registered for the national digital ID, so far. Ethiopia joins Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and other African countries that are transitioning to digital identification systems. Only early-stage startups in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, and South Africa, are eligible to apply for the $50,000 in equity prize.

The Central District Prosecutor's Office has declared that it will appeal the court's decision to close the case against the daughter of the driver who killed four-year-old Refael Adana earlier this year. Adana was killed in May, nine days after he was hit by a vehicle in Netanya. Police also carried out a series of tests to ensure that Dr. Heidi Fassler, Carol Fassler's daughter and the owner of the vehicle, was not involved in the accident. Among other things, Dr. Heidi Fassler's cell phone location was tracked, and it confirmed that she was not present at the scene. In August, the Prosecutor's Office explained why it chose to close the case against Dr. Heidi Fassler, and said that Adana had been killed in an "unavoidable" accident.
