The announcement for emergency comes days after clashes broke out in the Amhara region between military and local Fano militiamen. There were allegations of rights abuses in the areas where the Defense Force clashed with FANO. And the Defense Force has to note the rush to launch a large-scale military operation in the Amhara region and question its desirability. How about the defense force senior officials taking the initiative to hold talks with FANO representatives? After all, FANO was a big ally of the Ethiopian Defense Force when it was battling the TPLF. There is no enmity between FANO and the Defense Force, and the latter should not be a tool for the malicious politics of Abiy Ahmed’s administration.

On Friday, Ethiopia’s federal government declared a state of emergency in response to ongoing clashes between the military and local armed fighters in the Amhara region. The escalating security crisis prompted the decision, as the regular legal system struggled to control the situation. The Fano militia, previously allied with federal troops during the Tigray civil war, has been involved in the recent clashes due to perceived neglect of Amhara’s security by the national government. AdvertisementThe state of emergency grants authorities various powers, including the establishment of roadblocks, disruptions to transport services, curfews, and military control in specific areas. Mobile internet remained down in the region, and Ethiopian Airlines suspended flights to three of its four airports in Amhara.

(AFP) - Ethiopia's federal government on Friday declared a "state of emergency" as violent clashes escalate between the national army and local fighters from the northern region of Amhara. The statement did not make clear if the state of emergency applied nationwide or just to Amhara, which lies to the north of the capital Addis Ababa. Clashes in Amhara between the national army and local fighters have escalated in recent weeks, prompting travel warnings from foreign governments and the cancellation of flights by the national carrier Ethiopian Airlines. The government said the violence "endangered the constitutional order" and the decision to invoke a state of emergency was "unanimous". The prime minister said integrating these fighters into the national army or regional police would bolster "unity" in multi-ethnic Ethiopia but the move sparked protests in Amhara.

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) -Ethiopia's government on Friday declared a state of emergency in its second-largest region, Amhara, following days of clashes between the military and local Fano militiamen. Fighting that broke out earlier this week has quickly become Ethiopia's most serious security crisis since a two-year civil war in neighbouring Tigray region ended last November. The declaration gives the government the power to ban public gatherings, make arrests without warrants, and to impose curfews. Ethiopian Airlines had cancelled flights to three of the four airports it flies to in Amhara, an airline spokesperson said. The war in Tigray was rooted in tensions between regional and federal authority as well as old grievances between ethnic groups.

The announcement comes as fighting across Ethiopia’s second most populous region develops into a security crisis. Ethiopia’s federal government on Friday declared a state of emergency following days of clashes in the Amhara region between the military and local armed fighters. It did not say whether the restriction applied only in Amhara or across the country. Fano, a part-time militia with no formal command structure, backed federal troops in a two-year civil war in the neighbouring Tigray region that ended with a truce last November. Ethiopian Airlines had cancelled flights to three of the four airports it flies to in Amhara, an airline spokesperson told Reuters news agency.

00:00So it doesn't concern you with these airlines making a bigger push in? So, yeah, the airlines can establish hubs in Africa, but we rely on our strengths and internal capacity to effectively compete and ensure that we get a good market share. We also know that Ethiopian Airlines did take that 49% stake in what is soon going to be Nigeria Air. Alaska Airlines that we set up under joint venture in Togo is today the most successful airline in Africa as a regional airline. So we are very, very eager to see this airline start flying to serve the Nigeria market, connecting the domestic market to to the international market.
