The new national carrier, Nigerian Air, will begin operations by October this year according to reports from Bloomberg. Mesfin Tasew, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, which owns a 49% stake in the airline revealed in an interview with Bloomberg TV, Friday, that the firm is eager to see Nigeria Air start flying local and international routes. Ethiopian Airlines in 2022 won the bid to handle operations of the proposed Nigeria Air in controversial circumstances after local players complained the company was handed an advantage during the bidding process. Ethiopian Airlines will have a management contract. Questions were raised about who owns the aircraft used for the launch before Sirika confirmed it belongs to Ethiopian Airlines.

The fighting that broke out earlier this week has quickly become Ethiopia's most serious security crisis since a two-year civil war in Tigray region, which neighbours Amhara, ended in November. The orders applied to Amhara for now, but could be imposed in other areas if needed, the government said. The war in Tigray was rooted in tensions between regional and federal authority as well as old grievances between ethnic groups.

The city has seen asylum seekers sleeping on the sidewalks in recent weeks, unable to get a space in the shelter system. Demeke suggested the fact that many asylum seekers in need of shelter are from countries in Africa may have contributed to what she called government inaction. The Ethiopian association has rented a long-term Airbnb for just under $8,000 a month and rented another residential unit in Oshawa, Ont., to house several dozen recent asylum seekers, Demeke said. Outside the Ethiopian community, other institutions have warned that their efforts to help asylum seekers have strained scarce resources. The City of Toronto said that, along with community leaders, it had "escalated" efforts to respond to the urgent shelter needs of asylum seekers.

On Friday, the Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency in the second-largest region, Amhara, due to ongoing clashes between the military and local Fano militiamen. The recent fighting has swiftly evolved into Ethiopia’s most significant security crisis since the conclusion of a two-year civil war in the neighboring Tigray region last November. Fano, a militia composed of local volunteers, previously collaborated closely with the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) during the Tigray conflict. Mobile internet services remained disrupted in the region, and Ethiopian Airlines canceled flights to three out of four airports in Amhara. The conflict in Tigray originated from disputes between regional and federal powers, as well as longstanding grievances between ethnic groups.

Ethiopia’s Federal Government on Friday declared a “state of emergency” following an escalation of violence in the northern region of Amhara, the office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said. “It has become necessary to declare a state of emergency as a situation has emerged where it has become difficult to control this unacceptable movement under current law,” it said in a statement posted on social media. The statement did not make clear if the state of emergency applied nationwide or just to Amhara, which lies to the north of the capital Addis Ababa. Clashes in Amhara between the national army and local fighters have escalated in recent weeks, prompting travel warnings from foreign governments and the cancellation of flights by the national carrier Ethiopian Airlines. Tensions have been rising since April when the federal government announced it was dismantling regional forces including in Amhara, where nationalists felt the move would weaken Ethiopia’s second most populous region.

Violence has flared across Amhara over a disputed plan to absorb regional security forces into the national army. The state of emergency announced on Friday must be approved by parliament within 15 days or it will be repealed. Ethiopia last declared a state of emergency in November 2021, at the height of the Tigray conflict.

The war in Tigray was rooted in tensions between regional and federal authority as well as old grievances between ethnic groups.

It is the latest unrest to hit Ethiopia since Abiy took power in 2018 pledging to open up one of Africa's most restrictive political and economic systems. July 2018 - Ethiopia and Eritrea, which fought a border war from 1998 to 2000, end two decades of formal hostilities by signing a peace deal. June 2022 - In one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in Ethiopia for years, gunmen in Oromiya kill about 340 civilians. November 2022 - The federal government and Tigray regional forces agree to cease hostilities after a two-year war that killed thousands, displaced millions and left hundreds of thousands facing famine. August 2023 - Fighting breaks out between the military and local Fano militiamen in Amhara, quickly becoming Ethiopia's most serious security crisis since the end of the Tigray war.
